Ex-soldier Sandy D’abu is taking care of their business on Doradus while the rest of the crew flies their ship out on a security job. He’s agreed to keep an eye on Alex, a bartender at Durty Nelly’s, as a favor to some of the guys on the crew. When one of Alex’s old acquaintances shows up and makes him uncomfortable, Sandy offers to carry on a charade of being a couple. His protective feelings toward Alex are rapidly changing to more, but Sandy will have to take it slowly or he could end up losing Alex before he ever has a chance.
Alex Valentine has had a hard time in the past. His escape from being a pleasure slave landed him on Doradus with an extreme drug problem, but he’s tried to put that time behind him. He’s working hard at Nelly’s to pay off his debts when he finds himself facing Nick, a man from his past, who’d like to renew their relationship. Nick represents too many bad memories from a time in his life he’s not willing to repeat, so having Sandy there to watch over him couldn’t have come at a better time. Alex has never had anyone do what Sandy does in the name of friendship and not ask for anything in return. He finds himself more and more comfortable with the big man as each day passes, and with Sandy’s patient ways Alex may even find the strength he needs to leave the past behind.
Off World 2: Sanctuary is the second book in the Off World series. Duty begins Sandy’s concern for Alex, but it’s the man himself that turns a protective interest into so much more. With this emotionally gripping romance, Ms. Vaughan’s eye for detail is well realized in her men and in the world they live in. Searing passion combines with sweet love scenes to capture the reader’s heart, while the banter from supporting characters adds the perfect touch to lighten this intense romance.
