Kate Alexander’s quiet life changes in an instant when the tabloid press print stories about her supposed liaison with a well-known rugby player and love child with him. Furious, she defends herself to Lane Gerrard when he storms into her house and accuses her of selling the story to the newspapers.

New Zealand professional rugby player Lane Gerrard is used to women throwing themselves at him, and at first he believes the stories that Kate is trying to blackmail him by naming him as the father of her son, since they have never met. However, he soon realizes that Kate is innocent of his accusations.

The story revolves around the mystery about the paternity of Jamie, Kate’s nephew, whose mother died of cancer several years ago without revealing the identity of his father. Jamie, who bears an uncanny resemblance to Lane, upset that he might be his father, rebuffs his overtures and refuses to have anything to do with him.

The tabloid reports bring out a stalker who is threatening Kate and this person is putting her life in danger, breaking into her home and vandalizing it. In the middle of all this chaos and confusion Kate and Lane are falling in love with each other. But Kate is reluctant to commit after other failed relationships and an abusive ex fiancé.

Shelly Munro weaves a wonderful tale in Playing to Win, interspersing the romance between everything else that is happening around Lane and Kate. Lane wants to have a relationship with Kate and a family and, with his heart on the line, this is one game that he’s playing to win. You can’t help but fall in love with this couple as the warm and tender love story plays out. Fans of Ms Munro will love this book and will want to add it to their collection.
