When a horrible accident forces Kelly McWinter to quit his job as a cop, he chooses the quiet, laid-back tiny community of Indian Creek to deal with his emotional scars. His dog Jake, Anna Davis, Cam Belsher and Bubba Tate make up his quaint circle of new friends. His quiet routine is thrown into turmoil when Anna Davis turns up dead at the local flea market. To make matters worse, many of her friends had reasons for killing the woman. Can Kelly put aside his painful memories and find the murderer without getting involved in anything deadly serious?
Despite his personal problems and loneliness, Kelly makes a wonderful detective. He comes across as being such a smart person that the reader learns to trust his every instinct. Anna’s character is full of secrets that keep popping up at a fast rate, arousing mixed feelings for the loud-mouthed old woman. The start is a bit confusing with so much going on but by about half-way through the book, the tension mounts making it quite difficult to put the book down. I had a little trouble keeping track of the characters at times but to the author’s credit, they are some of the most colorful characters I've ever had the pleasure of reading. We do not know who the culprit is until well into the book, which quite adds to the suspense. Ms. Atkins is brilliant with the actual storyline and the deftly plotted novel uncovered such proceedings that managed to scare the hell out of me.
Anna's Secret is an absorbing book. Though the action flows well, it lacks romance. It is truly amazing that a book so saturated with suspense still manages to leave its mark. Ms. Atkins deserves accolades for combining a spine-tingling story carefully with Texas style humor and family dynamics. The Texas series starts with a bang with Anna's Secret and I sure hope I would re-visit these characters in the upcoming installments. Don’t miss this one!
