The Bonds of Love is the third book in The Powers of Love series, which continues the story of lovers Vic Braunson and Matt diLorenzo. Vic, a big strapping tattooed, body pierced muscular man who drives a city bus, lives for the sole reason to love Matt. Matt with his lean, toned athletic physique runs the pool and gives swimming lessons at the same gym Vic works out in, feels the same way about Vic. Matt has no super powers himself, save for the ability to give the powers to his lovers. These two are so strongly connected in every way they simply can’t imagine life without the other.
This installment of the series starts out three years into their relationship as Vic discovers another new power during a convenience store robbery. Over time, Vic has been able to refine his control and use of the two powers that are always with him; the superhuman strength and the ability to read minds. Matt however is unhappy when the powers repeatedly put Vic in jeopardy but he doesn’t want to lose the connection they share. Thanks to the powers, they have the ability to open themselves up to each other and connect both mentally and emotionally on all levels, which only serves to enhance their experience when making love.
We’re introduced to new characters; Kendra Jones, a police officer who seems to be a friendly face and Jordan Dubrowski, Matt’s first lover from high school. It was with Jordan when Matt first realized he gave superhuman powers to his lovers. It ended badly between them when Jordan became obsessed with the powers and started beating Matt. After seeing Matt’s name in a newspaper article about the convenience store robbery, Jordan determines to get the powers back again. Matt becomes upset when he starts receiving phone calls at work from Jordan. During one such call, Vic happens to be there and bluntly tells Jordan to back off. Sure he won’t be bothering him anymore, Matt unknowingly helps Jordan set a trap for him. What does Jordan have planned? What will Vic do when Matt, his reason for breathing is being threatened? Will the lovers come out unscathed?
After having read both of the previous books in this series, Matt and Vic quickly became two of my favorite literary characters. Having enjoyed the first two books so much I was really looking forward to reading this third and longer installment to their story. I thoroughly enjoyed the first 2/3 of the book, as Matt and Vic have a very open, honest and down-to-earth relationship, superhuman powers or not, which makes them a joy to read. Maybe my expectations were too high because unfortunately, I was a little disappointed in the path the rest of the story took so I could not enjoy it as much as I wanted to. J.M. Snyder has again done a terrific job in writing the way these lovers interact with each other as well as with other characters. But I didn’t quite believe the way our two heroes responded when faced with the unimaginable. Even saying that, I am looking forward to further installments of this series and I do recommend The Bonds of Love and the entire series to any fan of superheroes and to fans of m/m love stories.
