Susannah is the oldest of the twelve princesses born to the King & Queen of Middle Kingdom. She loves her sisters and parents but is so bored with her life, she starts to figure out things that should be kept secret. Realizing how she feels about two different men, Susannah is completely confused and does not know how to solve her problem. Since she is the oldest, the responsibility falls to her to make everything right for the family.
Jon Tom is a decetive who is hired to find out what exactly the princesses are doing to ruin their dancing slippers. He has fallen for Susannah from the very beginning and wants nothing more than to run away with her in spite of his job. During a trip to the enchanted castle Jon poses as the Prince John for Susannah and makes matters even more difficult as he finds out how the princesses are ruining their dancing slippers.
Jody Wallace has truly done a fabulous job of telling a story surrounding the princesses. With the involvement of the fairies too, they only add to the enjoyment of what happens to everyone in this story. From beginning to end, Susannah is pressed to keep her secrets even though it would make her life easier telling them all. Most of Susannah’s time is spent trying to undo the curse that was cast on Middle Kingdoms more than thirty years. That no male heir be born ever again because of the Emperor’s determination to keep a certain fairy out of his kingdom. Malady, the fairy in question has the tendency to put bad blessings on the children born, such as bad body odor, big feet, knobbyknees, etc.
As Susannah grew up helping out her parents with her younger sisters; Lilly, Esme, Peter (yes Peter), Nina, Calypo, Temple, Hortense, Ella, Annabelle, Fay and Rosa, the youngest at twelve, nothing changes in their lives. The time comes that Susannah refuses to take the sisters dancing with the Princes that are trapped in an enchanted castle below their castle home after she figures out that things are changing for everyone.
A Spell For Susannah made me grateful for siblings of both sexes and took me away to a time of much enjoyment. Out of all the men that come to visit, Jon Tom is the one person that Susannah finds intriguing and makes her angry at the same time. As they come together to solve the true curse, emotions between them heat up unbelievably and the ending will have you cheering for everyone.
