Swithin Prince Markis Shavar is seating in an open area away from the palace, seeking a small amount of peace from his duties. Markis controls the power of the comet, and it is left to him to stop a war that could destroy their world. Lurking in the shadows is a thief set to pick the pockets of Markis. Uly has never failed to succeed until now, caught in a strong grip not able to escape. Uly is held captive first by Markis, then by personal guard Ryanac. Uly is Simmie, a race of people invaded by Swithin and renamed Simeon. Rather than punish the thief, Markis decides to take him back to the palace and educate him in the Swithin way of life.
Keeping with the lessons from his advisers who interpret the prophecy surrounding the comet power, Markis has remained celibate for most of his life. Yet the more time he spends with Uly, the more difficult that state becomes. After months together, Markis admits he is in love with Uly. As the threat of war with the Azulites grows closer, Markis takes the only opportunity open to avoid this war; he rescues the Azulite princess Tressa and marries her.
The Swithin Chronicles: Uly’s Comet is a complex story that showcases fantasy with a touch of emotional reality. Sharon Maria Bidwell exhibits well defined characters, an intricate storyline of a world still in the growing stages. The emotional obstacles Markis, Ryanac and Uly must overcome are heart warming. This is a tantalizing and exhilarating beginning to an inventive series that I enjoyed greatly.
