Damalepazhur has become the new king since his father’s recent death while fighting a border war. He needs to have the fabled diamond to protect him from assassins. Chamberlain Lukaru, who helps the king with running his kingdom and a friend since childhood with whom he trusts with his life, always reminds him of who he is. Lukaru, along with the astrologers, find and brings the diamond named Ketu, who was born from the Gods and lived among the river people, to the king. Now that he knows who is trying to dethrone him, he takes matters into his own hands by making changes which shocks everyone. Then capture one of the king’s wives and younger brother who is spouting lies to gain leverage to take his place as king.

The King’s Diamond is not what you expect it to be but better and reading about the humility of a proud king who is use to others of his kingdom bowing, was not use to bowing to his subjects for anything. The diamond was also a surprise with his determination to protect the king as well as be his valet. With all the suspense about who was actually trying to kill the king made you wonder how they were able to persuade others to do their bidding without detection from the guards? This king was a little too kind but wanted a separate life and was not able to because of his status.
