Something happened the summer before high school that tore Vince Sanford's and Eric Somers' friendship apart, leaving Vince with an anger, a hatred, that he can't control. Now Eric wants back in his life again but Vince is afraid to give him a second chance.
It’s hard to forgive. It’s hard to forget. And sometimes, it’s so difficult that it blends into one’s psyche and warps them into something not quite right.
And thus we have Vince. Vince Sanford who has a bigot for a father, a chain-smoking, hand-wringing mother and a little brother that idolizes the ground their father walks on. I liked Vince who is without a doubt, the best anti-hero ever. Snarky, brittle, and intelligent even as a teenager, he seems invincible yet vulnerable.
Snyder’s description of Vince’s life is harsh and probably more real than anything I’ve ever read. The teen struggles to be everything that is not considered conformity, the parents that are simply not getting him and the cookie cutter world he can’t fit in because he’s like a squished brownie to their plain wafers.
And as the story rolls on, it becomes clear that Vince was once ‘normal’ and that time seems to coincide with his friendship with Eric Somers. Not unsurprisingly, that ‘normal’ time also ends when Eric and Vince’s friendship crumbles, which leads Vince on the path of “never forgiving, never forgetting” as his heart, even in the beginning of the story which is set three years from the ending of their friendship, still bleeds for Eric. Eric also became a favorite of mine as he, the still ‘normal’ one, slowly but steadily tries to fix what he’s broken with Vince dodging him at every turn.
Jumping from Vince’s teen years to college years and melding present with past, J.M. Snyder creates a love story that seems doomed from the beginning, with twists and turns that left me full of too many emotions to name, especially when Vince’s mind, stretched taut with hate finally, finally lets go, delivering a beautiful ending that gives me high hopes for their future. I highly recommend it for those who believe in the invincibility of love, even when it’s taken a hit or two.
