Literary Nymphs Reviewer: Scandalous Minx
Rave On - 2.5 Nymphs
Rae DeBoldt is hoping to escape the gloom of her lonely apartment she once shared with her girlfriend. She decides to go to a local Goth-inspired bar that has caught her interest. Rae meets a dancing girl that changes her life.
Echoes of Yesterday - 3.5 Nymphs
Jackie Johnson is an inquisitive six-year old fascinated with a newly formed hole in his backyard. He is sure there is more there than meets the eye while his parents believe it contains nothing more than the reminiscence of a time gone by when miners worked the area to make a living.
Frights and Delights contains two stories written with the hopes of adding a bit of thrills and chills to the reader. The first story, Rave On, left me a bit lost at some points. What started out as a story about a woman whose lover left her, drastically changed when she enters a gothic bar, and discovers something gruesome. I felt a bit teleported between scenes because of a lack of breaks that would indicate entering a new stage of the story. That coupled with the odd final scene left me a bit baffled. I believe those who enjoy gothic-based stories may enjoy this story more so than your average reader, who isn’t rapt by the scene. Echoes of Yesterday was an enjoyable read, and Jackie is a character I’ll likely remember for a while. He is a lawyer in training, if I’ve ever saw one. The mystery behind the hole is easy to get into and the outcome, while not frightening, is thought provoking.
