Charlotte Grand is escaping the grasp of her evil grandfather and an arranged marriage, with the help of her “intended”, who wants her to leave the house so he can be with the woman he loves. She has disguised herself as a man so as not to be recognized by anyone that would return her to her grandfather. Charlotte is on her way to a job she has gotten in the country to assist in a science project for Robert Ravings. She is beside herself when Charlotte realizes that he is keeping secrets and she wants to know all of them. While Charlotte is completing tasks for him, she begins to have feelings for him and that should not be happening. Charlotte only wants to earn enough money to go to America.

Robert Ravings, third son of an Earl, only wants to explore his love of science. After the death of his mistress, he retires to his estate, away from London and his prying family, to explore ways to bring a person back from the dead. When he finds out that Charlotte is a girl, and not the boy he had come to care for, he only wants to protect her from their families. He decides to visit her grandfather, and ask for her hand in marriage, knowing that he loves her.

Woman In The Mirror is not the book I expected, but it was more about how love triumphs. These two characters were lacking love and understanding from others, and yet they received it from each other without really knowing that they had. Strong-willed Charlotte is determined to have a life of her own and not to be forced to do the will of her guardian. I found myself cheering her on, and hoped that Robert would figure out what true love would be with her. Joyce Ellen Armond writes of blossoming love, science, and mystery that kept me reading to see if these two survived.
