Detective Evan Cerelli and his lover Matt Haight have set up a loving home with Evan’s children, but that’s not to say they don’t have issues to contend with. Evan hasn’t come to terms with the labels attached to having a male lover, and has issues with Matt still being friends with his one-night stand, Jim Shea. Matt makes the perfect house-husband but doesn’t want to be labeled the “woman of the house”, and doesn’t want to lose his identity with this new transition.

Even with more than a little tension between these two men, one thing rings true, they love each other. Is love enough to get them through these rough times?

Duty & Devotion reminded me of how fragile relationships can be and the importance of communication. Evan’s inability to focus on the love he has and the partner who accepted his children as his own made for some difficult times during this story. I could feel Matt’s pain and really wanted to throw an ink drawn shoe at Evan. Matt gave up so much to make Evan’s home happy and loving that I couldn’t understand why anyone else’s opinion should matter to him.

Matt wasn’t an angel but he wasn’t malicious and that made the bumpy roads easier to travel. When I saw the jealousy Evan felt towards Matt’s friendship with Jim, I could understand his panicked reaction. Contending with an old lover is never easy, but the fight was all in Evan’s mind. The love Matt felt for him and the kids was more than apparent.

Tere Michaels has delivered yet another incredible story in the About Love series.
