Laleh and her mother escaped Hezma-12, due to the treatment of women and the practice of engaging children as secondary wives to older men. Laleh is actually a princess that has been denied refugee status on Earth and the Federation since she is now an adult.

Pike is an Admiral with Skyfleet and has offered to help her if she marries him. They have only known each other for 24 hours but Pike has had run-ins with her brother when he had been on Hezma-12.

Refuge is a good story about the future and the interaction with other societies within the Federation. Laleh has a doctorate and understands several languages, which lead to a job on Skyport Virgo. Laleh wants Pike, even though she knows they may have a rough road ahead as they learn about each other since they married as a result of her deportation order. As the two travel to Pike’s new duty station at Skyport Virgo, they learn they have a combustible chemistry between them. I suggest you keep plenty of ice on hand and be prepared for lots of cold showers.

The cast of characters you meet in this story are very believable. The interactions also showcase some of the differences within different cultures and some of the misunderstandings that can come about. I am looking forward to reading more about Skyport Virgo.

NOTE: While there are references to some ménage practices on Hezma-12, there are no actual scenes.
