Nick Price thought he had seen it all during his time as a CIA agent but his latest mission has him questioning his boss’ sanity. What’s worse, Nick knows he can’t complain to his superiors. It would get him laughed out of the agency as who ever heard of chasing an absconded agent, who’s actually a werewolf in disguise? Still, Nick doesn’t need to believe in fairy tales to do a good job. He’ll find the agent, bring him in and then get the hell away from the whole sorry escapade. Or at least, that was the plan before he met Melody Gray, local private investigator who has just the information Nick needs.

When Melody and Nick meet, you can cut the tension with a knife. Nick’s gut knows she’s not telling him everything and Melody can tell he isn’t going to walk away without a fight. Nick’s going to find out pretty soon that she is more than willing to fight to protect her brother from becoming a science project for the Government. Yes, she will fight if pushed into a corner but when her wolf soul roars to life at the smell of her mate, Melody has a rough and tumble of another kind in mind. Never has her wolf and human parts fought so hard for control before. She can’t possibly mate with a human, especially one who’s hunting her littermate, can she? When Nick is hurt, Melody makes a rash decision that ends up having dangerous consequences and leads them on a path neither one of them could have predicted. It seems Melody isn’t the only one with powers beyond mere mortals…

Undercover Heat has a plot that twists and turns wonderfully. I was kept on my toes the entire time, trying to figure out what was happening with Nick, if Melody could control herself in such an unpredictable situation and just what does happen when werewolf and voodoo mix. This is book five of the author’s Heat series and once again, there are wonderfully strong, more often than not, pig-headed characters who welcome you into their story with open arms. I adore the entire Gray family and enjoyed reading Melody’s story a great deal. I could just feel her frustration at finding out she was supposed to mate with the enemy and I shared her pain at wondering what else could possibly happen to her family after this. The introduction of voodoo mythology was a surprise to me but I can tell the author has a lot of passion for the subject matter; passion that is evident in the vivid descriptions and detailed writing. I love getting lost in the Gray world of who is mated to whom and what everybody is getting up to. I especially loved the family get together at the end as it has been long overdue. One thing is for sure, I cannot wait for Brendan Gray’s story!
