Stephan Colby’s life is perfect. He’s the lead singer of a hot rock band founded by his best friend Rocky, their records are at the top of the charts and he’s found the love of his life. His world changes in a heartbeat when he learns his lover, Jeremy, was killed in a drunk-driving accident. In his grief, he turns to the one man he’s always depended on, his childhood friend Rocky.

Despite Stephen being clueless, Rocky Sanicily’s been in love with his best friend for years but fearing rejection, he’s kept quiet. He’s desperate to help Stephen through his grief, hoping that eventually he’ll be able to admit his feelings. The question is whether the truth will bring them closer together or drive them apart forever.

Shades Of Dreams is the latest release by multi-published author T. A. Chase. It’s a smooth flowing best-friends-become-lovers story with an unexpected but nicely integrated paranormal twist. Stephen’s grief is, at least for a time, debilitating and the author did a nice job expressing his deep emotional paralysis and an equally good job with Rocky’s reaction to his old friend’s pain. Some people might feel that Stephen got over his grief quickly but everyone deals with grief and loss in their own way and moves forward with their lives at different paces. There might be a little plot niggle here but it’s a small one.

There’s never any doubt that Stephen and Rocky care for one another and they have a many-years-long history together but I would have liked to feel it more. I just never got a good handle on their background together, even though I know it existed. I just didn’t feel much of a connection…at least until closer to the end when a little more of what happened to bring them together as kids came out in the story. Those revelations made it easier to understand what pulled and kept them together for so many years. Still, I never felt I really knew either character…what made them tick, and I wish their personalities were more deeply developed and the overall plot stronger.
