When Dr. Andrew Blunt comes across an injured wolf on the side of the road, it’s unexpected but it’s a shock when the animal turns into the gorgeous man Drew’s attracted to. In fact, Trent is everything Drew has ever wanted in a man…and then he gets the biggest surprise of his life. Trent is a spirit wolf, Drew’s mate and his bite carries a virus that can drive Drew insane.

Trent has spent years hunting ferals and never expected to find a mate…especially not a fragile human and knows claiming Drew will be impossible. Life gets even more complicated when Valerius, who is a Judiciary for their people, arrives and he’s their other mate.

Drew’s whole world’s been turned on its ear and he’s suddenly thrust into a life that threatens his very existence. Can Trent and Valerius find a way for Drew to be part of their life, while ensuring his safety or will they have to deny their mate bond forever to save him?

A Mate Beyond Their Reach is the first release in Scarlet Hyacinth’s new series Spirit Wolves. It’s an atypical werewolf story in that ferals - humans bitten by a spirit wolf - are extremely dangerous and the virus they carry will drive any human insane. The pack structure also appears to be different, which I wasn’t expecting with a ruling judiciary at the top.

Drew is a great character. He’s warm, caring, thoughtful and willing to do whatever is necessary for those he loves. Trent is a hunter…strong, fearless and protective. Then there’s Valerius. He’s equally strong, just in a different way. Put these three together and you have a winning combination in a new and creative world of wolf shifters. Their physical attraction is immediate, emotion attachment intense and the sex passionate.

I enjoyed the author’s use of secondary characters…especially Drew’s son Paulie and his friend Dan. They really added great interest and depth to the story and when the little surprise twist was revealed at the end regarding Dan…it was a big wow moment I didn’t see coming. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next release, Mates in Life and Death.
