They’ve saved the world from a clutches of a crazed serial killer bent on destroying the protective barrier separating this world from that of Hell, preventing the unleashing of its horrors. Now Vampire Police Detective Devon Harrigan and his lover, human Priestess Helene DuSolaire are spending time enjoying each others company and making love at every opportunity. Life is good for these two, and knowing the enemy of humanity has been defeated, allows them to go back to their everyday lives. That is until that same evil reaches across the veil during a religious ceremony, ripping Helene out the world and straight into the pit of Hell itself.
Left bereft with their emotional/mental bond suddenly gone, Devon spirals out of control. Alone and in a physical pain he didn’t know was possible, he struggles to come to grips with the loss of his one true love. Demanding help from every corner, he’s furious when he’s denied by everyone, saying Helene has served her purpose with her destruction. Devon refuses to accept this and begs the one woman he hates most in the world for her help. With the assistance of a few friends and against the advice of nearly everyone around him, Devon walks into Hell itself, to rescue the woman he loves.
Otherworld is the sequel to The Veil, and this well plotted, written and original urban romance takes up approximately 2 months after the last book left off. I loved seeing Devon and Helene happy and in love after what happened at the end of the first book. These two people are as different as two lovers could be…vampire detective and human priestess. Yet they are perfect for each other, with a physical and emotional bond that is literal in meaning… they can speak to each other mind to mind. This twist I loved. The emotions between them are high, the passion intense and the sex blistering hot.
The determination of Devon to do anything he has too shows the depth of his feeling and to what extremes he’s willing to go to in order to retrieve Helene from hell itself. The inclusion of intriguing secondary characters, both old and new, makes for an interesting and well rounded plotline and races forward at a nearly breakneck speed. I especially liked Devon’s best friend and partner, werewolf Joe Calloway and his determination to help him friend no matter what.
The most interesting, along with the most difficult part of the story to follow was the period of time when Devon was actually in Hell being tormented by his memories. Memories from the time he was human and with his family, up to the present. Since the scenes jumped around randomly, just like thoughts, I became a little confused at times. Even so it gave a good expression of what kind of things Devon had experienced in his five hundred years of life.
