At the start of the twentieth century, a mysterious man, known to most as The Emperor, was making waves across the New Mexico territory. Eli Fletcher had the honor of calling this great man his boss and was able to learn much from watching him in action but always wondered about his past. Just what made this Englishman come all the way to this land to carve out a living? When the Emperor’s relatives make a surprise visit, questions are finally answered and the truth comes out but not even Eli could have predicted just what an impact the truth would have, on both their lives.
I experienced mixed emotions while reading The Emperor. The western is my favorite genre and the author created a rich, vibrant setting that I happily immersed myself in. Unfortunately, the style of writing and use of language slightly detracted from the enjoyment as it seemed too clever for its own good and over complicated at times so I had difficulty following some parts. The beginning in particular, set in England, wasn’t a strong start in my opinion as I felt thrown in at the deep end without really knowing what’s going on. I’m so glad I continued though as by far the strongest element of this story was the interplay between a fantastic cast of characters. The building emotion between Eli and his boss is worthy of the strongest accolade I can offer – it made the tips of my fingers tingle, it was simply that good. I was intrigued by The Emperor and Eli was very likable so it was a pleasure to read their story, even if I did find it hard to connect them to the beginning part set in England. If you are a fan of this genre and love characters whose few words stir powerful emotion, I would definitely recommend this.
