Dean
has never loved another person as much as he did his brother. When his brother, who is in the military,
dies Dean has a hard time adjusting. To
honor his brother, Dean decides to become the pen pal of another soldier
overseas, never realizing that he has changed his life once again.
His Soldier by Anna Lee is a very good story
that had me in tears almost from the beginning.
Dean is a teacher at the local school.
His life has been hard; the only thing that made it bearable was the
love of his foster brother Dax and Dax’s mother Beth. I had a hard time not crying, as I read
about Dean’s home life and later Dax’s death.
Both these things play an important role in the story, be forewarned
they really pull at the heart strings.
Ryder
is in the Army. He takes his job and the
protection of his men seriously. When
the opportunity of pen pals is presented, he puts his name in the hat to help
motivate his men. It is easy to like
Ryder and the way he and Dean interact through their letters is fun to
see. Because of the book’s blurb on the publisher’s
site, readers know to expect tragedy to befall Ryder. Once it does, the young soldier acts
realistically by pushing Dean away due to fears of no longer being a ‘whole
man’. While Dean’s demands to be with Ryder are to
be expected, I would have liked to have seen Ryder resist a little more.
There
are some unexpected road obstacles in the men’s relationship, which are easy to
see coming. I actually could not believe
the extent to which one of the secondary characters went to but liked the way
Dean handled everything.
His Soldier is a perfect read for a lazy
day. I will also be keeping my eyes open
for more by this author.
