As the new Earl of Rose Hall, Johnnie must carry on his inherited duties. That means staffing the household with enough servants to meet the needs of the Rose family, as well as invited guests. Due to family hardships, Tyler seeks a job closer to his childhood home and applies for a position as footman; however the immediate attraction to Tyler inspires Johnnie to offer Tyler a position as his personal valet.

Valet is the first book in the Rose Family Chronicles. The genre is not a customary historical but a mix of time periods combined together with a few modern amenities incorporated. The time period mixture was done on purpose by the author. I think it adds more significance to the socially forbidden couple. The fans of the Heaven Sent series will recognize the engaging characters. The plot is a gratifying romance.

Johnnie is an easy going man, yet he takes his responsibilities seriously. He has had a few sexual flings but no long term affairs.  What Johnnie really desires is a cherished relationship, preferably with a man not part of the nobility.

Tyler is a hard working shy man who is always mindful of his servant status; he feels uncomfortable being treated as an equal by Johnnie. Though Tyler and Johnnie truly love each other, Tyler’s biggest fear is losing Johnnie when Johnnie is required to wed and provide heirs.

Jet Mykles has created an outstanding incredibly enjoyable saga. I could almost feel the love Johnnie and Tyler share.

Ruth Simpson’s primary goal was to make sure her nephews were in good hands.  Securing a position as a governess with their care giver was the perfect solution.  Since her sister’s disgrace Ruth’s parents treated her worse than ever, so she knew she was risking be disowned.  Ruth was willing to take that chance for a better life.  Never in a million years did she expect to be attracted to the handsome duke who seduced her sister.

Being the god of war has perks that Marcus, the Duke of Lyndhurst, enjoys.   But, it also brought problems that haunted him daily.  Marcus knew the tall, elegant lady who showed up seeking a job wasn’t being truthful, but he was curious.  He needed a distraction right now, and Ruth would do nicely.  Spending time with her was the only thing Marcus looked forward to.  If circumstances were different, Marcus would choose to have Ruth with him forever.

Marcus and Ruth’s romance is threatened by secrets and the interference of others.  Ruth has no idea that Marcus is a god or of the obligations he has, while Marcus is clueless about Ruth’s true identity.  Falling in love with her nephews has Ruth confused.  Part of her wants to stay, while another part knows that staying is impossible.  A life or death situation puts things in perspective when the couple is nearly robbed of their chance to choose.  I was mesmerized by the drama that unfolded towards the end of the story.  Of course one hopes things work out for the best, but there were moments I was afraid for Ruth and Marcus.  My favorite scene was when Marcus found Ruth after she tried leaving him.  If your heart doesn’t melt after reading that, I swear it’s made of stone.

War Chest, the fifth installment of the Even Gods Fall In Love series, reminded me of the appeal of an immortal gentleman.  Even with all his powers, at the end of the day, Marcus needed what all men need, a good woman by his side.  His willingness to give it all up for Ruth was touching and selfless and I know readers will eat this up like a late night snack.

Nettie Bledsoe has devoted her life to the church and helping others.  So when she stumbles upon a wounded man, Nettie can’t just walk away.  Despite warnings from her family, Nettie knows she has to get involved.  The church members surely couldn’t have a problem with Nettie caring for a motherless child.

People looked down on Jay Evans because of his job, the same job that lead to him getting shot.  Jay wants to change his life for his daughter, Goldie, but it’s not as easy as he thought.  Long ago, the church failed Jay, so he’s hesitant about accepting Nettie’s help.  Until he regains his strength and school resumes, Jay has to find something to do with Goldie.

Bonding with Goldie was easy for Nettie, but she was caught off guard by the pull she felt towards Jay.  He wasn’t what Nettie expected, and she saw a side of him that others didn’t.  It had been a long time since Jay considered having a woman in his life.  Because of him, Nettie could possibly be shunned by the church and her family.  Nettie’s will was strong, but Jay was afraid of the influence they had on her.

Nettie and Jay are so different, but that doesn’t stop them where matters of the heart are concerned.  Nettie is a no-nonsense country girl who believes the church can do no wrong.  Jay is a numbers man and single father who’s trying to go legit.  At first Jay isn’t happy about Nettie’s meddling, but soon he can’t imagine continuing life without her.  Jay had issues that only Nettie could have resolved.  She gave him life after tragedy and Jay gave Nettie hope.  Nettie never expected to have a family of her own and I know her family would have stifled the light in her eventually.   Nettie’s family loved her without a doubt, which probably led to their controlling ways.  They meant well though, and eventually they changed their tune.

A Treasure of Gold is the third book of the Migrations of the Heart series, but I feel it can be read as a stand alone without a problem.  Readers will become invested in the characters because they’ll feel so comfortable with them, as if they are neighbors from down the road.  I enjoyed the simpler time that this story was set in and the involvement of the church without being too preachy.  Piper Huguley does a wonderful job of building a foundation that makes a very memorable and touching story.

On the threshold of a duty bound adult, Viscount Nathaniel Thredgold seeks the adventure of a soldier before he is required to marry and provide an heir. Unfortunately, his escapade turns into seven years of grief for his family and best friend Wesley Douglas.

Like Stars is a Regency budding romance set in England during a time when a same sex couple was a hanging offense. Nate and Wesley are two teenagers exploring their sexuality, although Wesley is fairly sure he is gay. I got the impression Nate is bi-sexual since he did experience intimacy with females while he was away fighting a war. The plot illustrates the strong bond of friendship between Nate and Wesley more so than lovers.

Nate sustained numerous injuries during the war that left him disfigured enough that his family did not recognize him; even Wesley believed Nate was an imposter. The main reason Nate returned home after so long an absence is to make amends for the impetuous way he left home.

Heartbroken by the loss of Nate, Wesley continued his schooling. Wesley became a doctor who chose to practice in his home county of Haversham rather than London. Of all the people that knew Nate, Wesley is one of the last to acknowledge Nate, as well as forgive him.

Like Stars is a charming as well as enjoyable friends to lovers saga.

Prince Joron of Blade Rain spends his days trying to help his people and that isn’t an easy task when his father, the king, cares for little except his own pleasures. To get food and supplies out the castle, Joron dresses as a servant. It’s on one of these missions that he’s seen by King Aric, the leader of the neighboring kingdom, who’s smitten with him.

Months later his father dies mysteriously, putting Joran in danger from the new king, his older brother and his evil step-mother. It’s at the funeral that Aric rescues Joran while he’s hiding, dressed as a maiden. Thinking it’s their sister, Liarta, Aric offers for her hand in marriage. The problem, she’s already engaged. Joron learns that Aric wants him, so Joron makes a bargain. Himself, instead of his sister, putting him in the middle of a two royal courts filled with deceit, danger, political intrigue and lies. Can Joron be happy with Aric and find a place in his heart?

Ice Dragon Tales is the first book by Hurri Cosmo that I’ve read. There are things about the book that I like and others that I don’t , so I’ll divide the review into two sections to define them.

What I like. The premise isn’t new but it has potential, with the likable Joron a stand out. His personality is pretty well developed and you can feel how much he cares about his people—that he’s willing to sacrifice for them. The way the author disguises him to go on missions outside the castle is nicely done as are those where he’s dresses as a woman. There are numerous interesting secondary characters woven throughout the plot. I particularly enjoyed the scenes with him and Aric’s adorable small son.

The unique names and descriptions work for me, and there lots of action, danger, and political intrigue, with all the twists you’d expect in a royal court.

What I didn’t like. Too many men are attracted to Joron and want to have sex with him. In the plot it’s taken to the extreme with several near rapes and forced seductions—and the book only comes with a light BDSM warning. For some readers this would be a problem, and I find the omission annoying. Even Aric, the other male lead, is rather dubious in the honor department. It definitely took some time for him to grow on me.

There are TOO many points of view. Some actually muddied the plot, adding unneeded information and slowing the pace.  My last niggle is the over abundance of wicked individuals—and their extreme behavior. If a couple of the characters hadn’t redeemed themselves by the end, I would have banged my head on the desk.

Content Warning: Numerous near rape/forced seduction scenes

Bride of Blackness Castle

Lady Anne Crofton is a woman who refuses to let fear stop her.  She’s willing to do anything necessary for her father’s life.  Confronting the beast of a man holding her father captive isn’t enough.  Anne is selfless and comes up with the perfect solution, she thinks.  Unfortunately she’s tricked into a situation that she has no control over while things grow more complicated by the minute.

Robert MacQueen is a broken man.  His life is one of isolation and pain.  The only thing keeping him alive is his determination to get revenge on the man who ruined his life in the first place.  Finally fate is on Robert’s side, and he comes face to face with the man he hates most.  Marrying the man’s daughter seemed to be the icing on the cake.

Robert and Anne both misjudged each other.  Anne is more of an annoyance to Robert when they first meet.  He had sunken too deeply into his sorrow to recognize all that Anne offered him.  He was so focused on the past and reliving it, that Robert almost lost his chance for a future.  He said he blamed Anne’s father, but honestly Robert blamed himself.  At some points in the story I wanted to cry beside Robert because I felt the burden of his pain.  I’m amazed he could go on like that.  Once Anne learns the entire story of what happened to Robert’s family, she begins to understand him and stops seeing him as a monster.  When she finally sees him as a man, Anne accepts her feelings for him.  I was touched by the scene when Anne went through some items in his room.  It gave me more of a glimpse into Robert that I wasn’t expecting to get.  Anne was easy to understand in a comfortable, relaxed manner.  I knew who she was, right from the beginning, but Robert took some work that I was happy to do.

Bride of Blackness Castle is a wonderful tale about second chances.  Elaine Coffman has a talent for creating male characters with serious baggage and making readers feel as if they were witnessing their struggle as a sidekick, not a reader.  Anyone who appreciates being sucked into another world would be missing out by sleeping on this story.  It’s an eye-opener.

Thom has loved Kitty since he met her, but he knows she is involved with Devlin.  Thom’s memories of the war, when he had to make life and death choices, haunts him to the point he starts whoring and getting drunk instead of doctoring.  Things change when Devlin and Kitty ask for his help.

The latest book in the Brothers in Arms series, Fight for Love, continues stories of men adjusting to life after war and the men and women who love them.  This is a little different as Devlin survived a different type of life than going to war.  Devlin and Kitty knew each other long before they met Dr. Thom Peters, though they all have quite a few mutual friends.

Several of the ménage families know Thom and want nothing more than his happiness.  As a struggle for the London underground is brewing, things happen that put both Kitty and Thom at risk because of their association with Devlin.  Something Kitty does brings things to a head and gets Sir James involved as well.  I was surprised by the solution Sir James created.

Devlin and Thom are both under the impression Kitty would be better off with the other and their ménage is only temporary.  Ms. Kane does resolutions of these types of relationship very well.  Those familiar with the Brothers in Arms series will not be disappointed with Fight for Love either.  While each story has some of the same elements, the author creates very different and interesting combinations with the men and their woman.

I am looking forward to the next story and hope one day we see one for Sir James.  I recommend that the series be read in order; however, it is not necessary to enjoy each story.

Juliette Pemberton has accepted her arranged marriage to the infamous Black Scot.  She didn’t think the bad rumors could be true about the man.  After meeting a black-haired devil who unlocked feelings Juliette never knew existed, she becomes torn between duty and desire.

Stephen Gordon’s life hasn’t been an easy one, and it’s left him distrustful of women.  When he arrives to claim Juliette, Stephen tries very hard not to fall victim to her charms.  She drives him crazy, in more ways than one.  Because he’s been withholding information about The Black Scot, Stephen hurts Juliette.

The simple budding relationship between Stephen and Juliette was made unnecessarily complicated by Stephen.  I understood his reasons for keeping his mouth closed, but after a point he should have come clean.  The only reason I didn’t lose respect for him was because he did at least try to reveal all to Juliette before he slept with her.  I have to give him credit for that.  I love a man of honor.

The Black Scot has some unexpected humor centered around Juliette’s constant talking.  I laughed out loud many times.  If you enjoy verbal sparring as foreplay as much as I do, this story is a must read.

The Legend of Uncle Everett

Blake had heard stories of the infamous feud between his great Uncle Everett and rival in love JB Sanderson. It is only after both men have passed on that Blake discovers just how intense things got between the two of them. They had supposedly fallen out over a girl, but while sorting through Everett’s belongings, diaries are uncovered that detail a secret love between the two men that if discovered, would have caused untold damage to their families reputations in 1930s small town Texas. Now that Blake knows the truth, he decides it’s time Everett and JB’s story is revealed.

I found the writing in The Legend of Uncle Everett relaxed and welcoming, as if I was a friend being let in on a family secret. I was very interested in the premise of love being covered up by a feud, and the lengths the characters went to in order to dupe everyone was a lot of fun to read. Everett’s great nephew Blake acts as narrator, hand picking the special moments in his Uncle’s and JB’s secret life that he is willing to share, and I think Everett and JB would be happy that Blake is finally telling their story. I feel that The Legend of Uncle Everett was a huge undertaking, as it was a vast love story that spanned many years. Whereas the story could have lost its way, getting tied down with 40 plus years’ worth of love story, I think the author did a good job of providing just enough detail into the characters’ lives while still maintaining intimacy and mystery. Everett and JB’s love was a sweet story, sometimes bittersweet, but one that I definitely could have read more of.

Lee’s grief for his father has taken him to places he never thought he would go.  When the results of his actions cause a young woman to be compromised, he does the only thing he can to set it right.  Now married Lee, his wife, and his in-laws head to Arizona to start over.  Only, along the way, Lee begins to realize that things are not always what they appear to be.

Waltz With a Lawman is the newest story by author Brit Blaise.  This is a historical romance that pulled me in from the first page.  Right at the beginning you know everything is not what it seems, yet Lee is so overcome with grief that he is unable to see that for himself.  I liked that the young man had others looking out for him, even when he thought it was unnecessary.   Where Lee is young and innocent, Shad is hard and jaded.  The lawman is tough and you can’t help but like him. It’s hard to imagine him having a soft side, yet with Lee he does.  There is an instant connection between the two men yet, because of the time period in which they live, it is not as easy to form a relationship as it is today.  The author does a good job bringing these two men together, while at the same time keeping the story believable. The passion between them is intense and I loved that there was no denying they were starting a relationship and not just scratching an itch.

While the mystery is easy to follow, and even predictable at times, the book still held my interest.   I could not wait to see how the author solved each issue that popped up.  And as for the problem people, I could not wait to see them each get what they had coming.  While there are a couple of things I wish the author would have gone into more detail about, it did not keep me from enjoying this story.

Waltz With a Lawman is a well written story that historical fans are sure to love.

Being the daughter of a king hadn’t protected Asgerd from the nightmare she’s stuck in.  She’d been taken by a most disgusting oaf who treated her no better than a slave.  Her body had been ravished but her spirit wasn’t completely broken.  Asgerd still had a longing for the most handsome and fiercest warriors alive that no amount of suffering could kill.  Grim never seemed interested in her before, so there could be no way he’d want her now that she was damaged goods.

Grim Hammerhand has the looks of a god and stamina of a shape-shifter.  He’s been on the battlefield since the age of thirteen.  Men and women kept their distance from Grim, and that’s why the king knew Grim was the only choice for getting Asgerd back alive.  Grim cared only for his reputation as a warrior, not for what people thought of him.  Only one person mattered to him and that was Asgerd.

The king had offered Asgerd to Grim but he refused.  Grim had never wanted to marry but Asgerd was in his heart so he couldn’t resist his chance to finally be with her.  Asgerd agrees to marriage but she’s unhappy with how Grim treats her.  Asgerd doesn’t understand why Grim doesn’t have more trust in her and Grim doesn’t understand why Asgerd won’t accept that she has to earn his trust.  Up until this point he has given her more of himself than he ever has to another woman.  As far as Grim is concerned, that should be enough.  Asgerd is quick to let him know that she won’t stand to be treated like a servant in her own home and this causes some very heated moments between the couple.

Asgerd and Grim have both had secret crushes on each other for the longest time.  Grim was afraid of getting close to any woman because he didn’t trust them.  He never wanted to let a woman control him with sex or because he was heads over heels in love.  Asgerd was the only person who snuck into his heart and he didn’t like the feeling of not being in control.  This can all be blamed on Grim’s mother.  After learning about the upbringing Grim had, I’m amazed he turned out as well has he did.  Grim will most likely always find it difficult to let himself care for others and to let others care for him.  Asgerd is angered because she thinks that Grim only married her out of pity.  He’d done nothing but laid down the law telling her how things were going to be.  All she wanted was for him to accept her as her wife.  He had no problems sharing with her in the bedroom, but when it came to matters of the heart, Grim was selfish.

Northman’s Pleasure is another reminder of how skilled Kate Hill is at creating characters with such meaningful history that you can’t help but love them. Everyone has flaws, but their flaws made me feel closer to them.  Grim and Asgerd do not disappoint, because they both brought heat to the pages.   As much as I loved Grim and Asgerd, I think Grim’s cousin Thorkel was my absolute favorite and I would love to read more about this clumsy warrior and what makes him the way he is.  If you haven’t read a Kate Hill story before, you are missing out.  This book will draw you into her world and you won’t want to leave.

Marissa Barclay has been looking forward to her season to be introduced into society. This was her only chance to find a husband who was a true gentleman.  Mari didn’t want to go through the horror that her sister had in her first marriage.  With her sister being pregnant, Mari’s plans were being ruined.   Now she was being saddled with the most irritating chaperone alive, her brother-in-law.

Jamie MacLeod was suppose to be watching his brother’s estates and keeping an eye on Mari, as well.  Any other female would appreciate his protection and swoon at his feet, but not Mari.  She is more stubborn than a mule and disobeys Jamie every chance she gets.  But Mari’s anger doesn’t mask her attraction to him and Jamie loves pointing this out.

Mari and Jamie share some heated arguments and embraces.  When a past enemy resurfaces, it becomes a matter of life and death.  Jamie comes to Mari’s rescue just in time, and Mari is faced with a truth she can’t deny.  She wants Jamie.

Rogue of the Isles is the second book in the Rogue series, but it doesn’t take a backseat.  I was glad that Cynthia Breeding brought this couple together because I love a couple that argues.  Jamie is a man who knows his appeal to women and he can’t seem to understand why Mari isn’t panting after him.  Mari is secretly panting after Jamie, but I love the fact that she’s smart enough to not let him know.  She is the kind of woman who has her own mind and isn’t afraid to use it.  My favorite scene involved Jamie throwing Mari over his shoulder.  She’d pushed him too far and he meant to let her know.  The fallout from that scene really hurt Mari and even though Jamie didn’t think it was a big deal, he went the extra mile to correct the situation just so Mari could be happy. I was so touched I actually sighed.  If you love a highlander with heart, I beg of you, pick up this story and enjoy.

As a widowed marchioness Jillian Alton has very few options to become financially independent.  There would be no place for her, once Jillian’s step-son returned home to take control of the family holdings.  After enduring a difficult marriage, Jillian vowed that no man would ever own her again.  When an offer from the prince is presented to her, Jillian takes on the job eagerly.  Polishing a newly titled Scotsman should be a simple task.

The last thing Ian MacLeod wanted was to be an earl and prance about in English attire all day.  He didn’t think there was anything wrong with his manners.  But, the perks that came with his new title was what his clan needed, so he had no choice.  As soon as possible, Ian planned to return home to Scotland

Ian was definitely drawn to his new teacher, who looked like a woodland nymph.  Even though she seemed a bit too serious at times, Ian intended to be the man to get Jillian to break a few rules.  Jillian was determined not to give in to Ian’s flirting, yet she couldn’t stop the butterflies she felt each time he looked at her.

The more time they spent together, Ian and Jillian begin wondering about their future.  Ian knows he wants Jillian as his wife, but Jillian refuses his offer, even though it breaks her heart.  As Jillian’s step-son becomes an unexpected problem, things become hazardous.

Rogue of the Highlands is the first book in the Rogue series and will refresh your memory on how scrumptious men in kilts are.  Ian is a man of great honor and he has strong feelings about what is right.  He knows the proper way to treat a woman, even though his dinner etiquette might be lacking.  His affection for Jillian and her sister was touching and I was cheering for Ian to get the girl the second he appeared.  Jillian let her guard down with him even when she didn’t mean to.  There were times my heart bleed for some of the things Jillian endured.  I’m glad she was a quick thinker and that Jillian didn’t let her past kill her chance for happiness.  She deserved so much and I felt Ian was the only man who could give it to her.  Readers will embrace both characters like old friends and enjoy this read as much as I did.

Erika Silverhair‘s life changed drastically the day she decided to walk a warrior’s path.  It was the only way to keep her freedom, even though she feared her role as The Angel of Death.  For years, she’d taken her destiny and the responsibility of others into her own hands.  Now, Erika’s been captured, along with her brother, and falsely accused of a raid.  If she’s not careful, Erika might lose something more precious than her independence, like her heart.

Though it had been attempted twice, Conor Mac Ferghal, The Devil of Dunlough, vowed that no woman was going to put an end to him.  Only his sister understood the private hell that Conor lived through.  His dark menacing attire and scarred face puts fear in the hearts of many and helps him protect his people.  However, this female prisoner didn’t recoil from him as most did.  Her fire and passion was making him curious.  Conor promised the woman freedom, once he got to the bottom of things, but he was starting to regret his promise.

Erika and Conor agree to hash it out with swords on the battlefield for her freedom, and Erika loses.  New developments and feelings of guilt make Erika agree to Conor’s terms of marriage.  Too many lives have been affected by her decision to go on the run.  Each day brings Erika and Conor closer and farther apart at the same time.  Erika doesn’t believe that Conor wants her for the right reasons because Conor can’t be honest about his feelings for her, not even with himself.

Family and obligation weighs heavily on Erika and Conor’s shoulders, but it doesn’t dampen the fire between them.  But no amount of incredible love making can make Erika change her plans of leaving Conor when it’s time.  Conor’s confession of love eventually comes, but not before things take a bad turn.  Though they appear to be as different as night and day, Conor and Erika are the perfect balance for each other and eventually they both give in.  I appreciated the extreme differences about their clothing and body types.  The author gave me a wonderful visual.   Each of them has a strong bond with their sibling that I found admirable and touching.  Even after the horrible experiences that hardened their hearts, Conor and Erika experienced unconditional love, as unaware as they were.  The glimpse into their souls let me see how selfless they both were, even though all around them didn’t have such insight.  Understanding what made them tick didn’t make me feel sorry for either of them though.  I was more impressed, if anything.

Erika fixed the scar on Conor’s heart and he, in turn, gave her the home and security she needed all along.  Part of me doesn’t want Erika to put down her swords because I love the idea of her fighting for those who can’t fight for themselves.  Then the other part of me imagines her fighting beside her man and nothing can be hotter than that.  I love the idea of Conor and Erika in battle together, in and out of the bedroom.  Plus, Erika’s brother and Conor’s sister gained a special place in my heart and I need to hear more about them.  There’s no doubt in my mind that Devil’s Angel will be a hit with everyone that picks it up.

The moment she laid eyes on the raven-haired devil with the stormy gaze, Sorcha was hooked.  He’d come to make peace with her clan, but his presence was playing havoc with her libido.  Sorcha had vowed to be a healer and warrior to her clan.  Men were off limits, especially this man who made her feel things she didn’t want to feel.

The alliance between the two clans was rocky enough without adding in the unexpected heat Laird Reed Campbell feels when he meets Sorcha.  One taste of her would be enough to get her out of his system, or so he thought.  That one taste was forcing him into marriage with a hellion who said she looked forward to being his widow.  Sorcha needed discipline and Reed wanted to be the man who gave it to her…in his bed.

When Reed and Sorcha are in the same room, it’s like a detonator.  It was only a matter of time, a very short one, before the two of them stopped pretending they didn’t want each other.  Sorcha isn’t the meek and mild type and this drives Reed to distraction in more ways than one.  He wants to be angry, but Reed can’t stop feeling fortunate for being bound to Sorcha.  The couple bond in ways they never imagined, even though they have trust issues.

Highlander Brawn is the sequel to Highland Steam but that doesn’t mean it takes a back seat where amorous relations are concerned.  This story might make you break a sweat while reading, so come prepared.  I was curious about Reed and Sorcha when they first appeared.  Brief as their first encounter was, I felt the mounting tension and knew something big was coming.   Hands down, the best scenes in this book happen in the first few pages when Reed goes for Sorcha.  Readers will be tickled and turned on at the same time.  I love Sorcha’s boldness at times and Reed’s reaction to her moods.  A couple like them will always keep you wanting more.  Thank you, Eliza Knight, for giving me more than I expected.

As the ship sailed into the Matagorda harbor, it was the end of the journey for Spanish nobleman Joaquin de Castille and Roman Priest Tomas. However, it was not the end of the love shared by the two men. Tomas was bound for Texas and Joaquin was bound for California. The hostile greeting by the natives in Texas altered Tomas’ decision to stay in Texas; consequently Tomas changed his destination to California, reuniting the lovers once again.

Scarlet Blade is a wonderful illustration of character traits, as well as religious views. Because of his wealth and nobility status, Joaquin is allowed to be a little more openly gay. Also because of his skill in weapons, Joaquin is not an easy target to bully. Joaquin was exiled from Spain to prevent embarrassment to his mother. Tomas has the most interesting background of the two main characters. Following the Roman family traditions of giving the younger son to the church, Tomas had no choice in becoming a priest with several older brothers in the household. Tomas did not follow the church’s dictate that God condemned same sex love. Tomas believed he was born with the sexuality God intended him to be and therefore, men loving men is not unnatural or a sin. Tomas is even more skilled in weapons than Joaquin, though Tomas tries harder to avoid conflicts than the easily offended Joaquin.

Jez Morrow has created an amazing as well as an exceptionally enjoyable historical saga. The play on words is humorous plus the intimacy is fascinating.

Hooch and Howls

Sometimes desperate times require desperate measures if you want to survive. During the financial depression, as well as the time of prohibition, best friends and secret lovers Roger and Jonathan turned to the Canadian bootleggers in hopes of making enough money for a fresh start out west. However, the job went horribly wrong and it takes the lonely werewolf, Malachi, to liberate Roger and Jonathan from the dangerous chaos their life had become.

Hooch and Howls is a well-written romance with just enough background to fully grasp the dilemma each man is dealing with.  Set in Herman’s Island, Nova Scotia at a time when honest men were forced to discard their non-profit fisherman’s jobs for the illegal activities of rum-runners, the plot highlights the in-depth characters especially well. Malachi is financially stable, yet he is faced with being gay, as well as being a werewolf, which placed him in the position of being an outcast in both societies. Roger is an opportunist, however his intentions are honorable and his motivation is survival for himself and Jonathan. Jonathan is naive to all the criminal predators waiting to take advantage of the unwary. But after a few dangerous encounters of being prey, Jonathan quickly learns that Roger is the only person he can trust.

Karenna Colcroft has created an outstanding saga that I very much enjoyed. The heartwarming plot illustrates some of the pitfalls of life when a country is in a monetary crisis. Also displayed are exceptionally sensual intimacy scenes.

Pride and Prejudice

Darcy and Elizabeth seem to be attracted to each other, despite being at odds because of their personalities.  Though societal mores would prevent them from getting together, they manage to find a way, though later incidents would seem to keep them apart.

Pride and Prejudice is very true to the classical version we are familiar with.  Ms. Armstrong adds a little heat between Darcy and Elizabeth that show the chemistry between them is strong.  The addition of Elizabeth’s constant thoughts about Darcy and his about Elizabeth were added smoothly into the story.  I had hoped the heat factor would be a little higher, though.

I did feel that the scenes between Darcy and Elizabeth were sort of “slam, bam, thank you, ma’am” type of scenes.  Though the chemistry is apparent, the scenes were disappointing to me, considering how smoothly Ms. Armstrong added the twists to this classic story.  The addition of the heat and interaction between them though made the angst of the story even more intense, even though we are already aware of the ending.

I happen to read the classic every year, as it is a family tradition.  This version will more than likely be alternately read as nothing is lost in the translation and in some parts, actually enhance the story.

Run To Ground

Finding Emmanuel Grimshaw was not a problem for Tallin Undine. However convincing Emmanuel to return home was another matter. The debate ended when three werewolves sent by Emmanuel’s enemy attacked. The fight to the death activated the inner beast’s passion resulting in a renewal of the mating bond between Emmanuel and Tallin formed year ago. Except now the bond is stronger as well as indestructible.

Run To Ground is an exhilarating dark fantasy filled with jealousy, prejudice, intense combat, heartwarming emotions, as well as almost vicious lovemaking.  The plot illustrates clan hierarchy. The characters are convincing. Emmanuel was born a werewolf; though he is not content to live as a savage catering to the will of his beast. Absence from the clan for years allowed Emmanuel to embrace his newly civilized human side. Nevertheless, Emmanuel must go back to claim the position of clan chieftain, in order to rescue his sister who is being held captive by an enemy. Becoming chieftain also permits Emmanuel the opportunity to change the clan’s violent way of life. Because Tallin was changed into a werewolf, then rejected by his mate, Tallin would never be considered equal to Emmanuel in the eyes of the clan. Still, Emmanuel has always loved Tallin and views Tallin as an equal.

Darcy Abriel has created an outstanding extremely enjoyable saga.

Lydia Swann-Williston is a widow in a sticky situation.  She’s being forced to marry a man who could have possibly killed her husband in battle.  But her biggest concern is the fact that the wild Scotsman is said to be a monster.  He and his entire clan are ferocious blood-drinking warriors.  As a general’s daughter, Lydia knows it’s her duty to go through with this marriage.  Plus, it might be the only way she will ever gain a chance to have children someday.

Kieran, Laird Kilborn, does not want to marry an outsider.  Certain things within his clan should be kept secret.  Kieran is plagued by a dark thirst that consumes him at times and a temper that evokes the fear of many.  Hopefully, this marriage would bring not only money and safety, but a chance to dilute his bloodline.  And if Lydia should desire him and bring him pleasure, that would be an added bonus.

Lydia is confused and aroused by her new husband.  Kieran is so gentle and passionate with her, it makes her knees buckle.  Witnessing his dark side and seeing him drink the blood of his enemy was a shock, even though she’d heard rumors.  Kieran himself is surprised by some of the acts he commits and does his best to hide as much as possible from Lydia.  Lydia however, is determined to know the truth about the family that she’d married into.   Kieran comes from a line of berserkers and vampires and Lydia is concerned how it will affect their lives, especially future children.  Kieran is a good man and doesn’t let the darkness take control of him.  His loyalty to the clan and his care for Lydia is quite moving.

Temptation in Tartan is a well-woven historical with a paranormal twist.  Kieran and Lydia have so much passion between them that it practically leaps off the pages.  I especially liked their first meeting.   Some of their love scenes will make your eyes pop.  This lusty couple couldn’t seem to keep their hands to themselves.  Even though Lydia was previously married, she had an unexpected innocence about her.  Despite this innocence, Lydia is a strong woman and I loved her fearlessness.  There is a good amount of twists and suspense that will draw readers in and keep them curious until the very end.
