All of Calle’s life he’s been delegated to the role of second best. For once, he wants to know what it’s like to be first in someone’s thoughts and heart. When Mosca offers him an opportunity to become his personal guard, Calle is surprised but ready to take on the challenge. Now if only he can get Mosca to let down his defenses long enough to embed himself in Mosca’s heart.

King's Gambit is the sequel to Checkmate and I loved reading every word. Treva Harte takes us into Mosca’s world. It’s a dangerous environment full of treachery that has no room for love. Calle wasn’t my favorite person after the first story, but I’ll admit I wasn’t upset to see him get his due. I could finally understand his decisions and relate to them. Years of longing tainted him and left him broken in body and spirit. It’s enough to make a person desperate for love and devotion. The setting for this story was perfect. It was an environment where Calle wasn’t comfortable and had to escape his shell and learn to stand again. I wasn’t sure how he would fare, but was pleasantly pleased by his tenacity. Treva Harte adds action, suspense, and stimulating sexual encounters to make King's Gambit one sequel you won’t forget.

Mosquito has come to understand his role on the compound. The respect held by the workers for the former foreman is like a living thing, breathing life into the daily operations and circumventing any authority that Mosquito could establish. Mosquito encounters Rey and understands why the men hold him at such high esteem.

Rey recognizes why Mosquito was given the nickname right away. There’s a secret that he has brought back to his old home and he has no choice but to trust Mosquito to keep it. While holding confidences is fine with Mosquito; keeping Rey is definitely part of the bigger plan.

Treva Harte’s latest release King in Check adds a combination of setting, plot, and interesting characters to draw readers in and hold their attention. The story shows us the power of jealousy and love, adding twists to this story that you won’t see coming. And while Rey and Mosquito are both fascinating characters, I found myself drawn to a secondary character and wanting to know more about him. For those who enjoy M/M, there is a smoking hot scene, and those who enjoy M/F won’t be disappointed either. The story ends with just enough up in the air for me to believe there could be more to come. That could be greed talking and not the author’s intent, but one can hope.
