Engineer Jackson Strange has been accident-prone his entire life so after he slashes his leg open at work, he finds himself under the care of the attractive new doctor in town. When he arrives at the clinic, he expects to need stitches but he doesn’t expect the sizzling attraction he feels for the charming Dr. Julian Piet. As a heavily closeted man, Jack lives a lonely existence hiding his sexuality in his small-town Alberta home and his desire for the younger Julian is cracking open the doorway he’s hidden behind for years.
Julian moved home after a devastating betrayal by his boyfriend the year before and his self-confidence is at an all-time low when he meets Jack. In the following weeks, he and Jack circle around each other, acting as friends while playing hockey, always keeping each other at arm’s length. It’s not until they’re given a push by Julian’s bossy sister, Roz, that the men given in to their feelings and get together sexually for the first time. Despite the fact that Jack doesn’t do relationships (he’s really bad at them), the two move forward one day at a time, all while confronting roadblocks which could tear them apart.
True North is the first release in Brown & Kane’s new Lost Boys and Love Letters series. It’s a warm and touching story of two men damaged by past experiences, and how they go about finding the happiness they’ve been looking for. These two men are so real that I can easily imagine them as my friends or neighbors, and they have issues that almost everyone can relate to. And what couple doesn’t sometimes need a push, which is why Roz’s character is vital to the story. She and the other secondary characters make a great backbone to help propel the story forward when Julian and Jack need a little help. Together the men are near perfect, supplying what the other needs, and the sex…well, can you say hot enough to melt snow.
The authors do a nice job in describing the locale. This is especially true of the scenes where the weather turns bad and the various characters are forced to deal with blizzard conditions. The other thing which I found unusual in an M/M romance is the numerous important female characters which range from small Hallie (who steals every scene) to Jack’s ill mother (who only wants him to find happiness). Add all of these components together and you have a story that pulls at the heartstrings, and makes you wish that you lived near a town like the one in the story.
