Colt Marshall comes from a long line of wranglers. He hauled horses and cattle across the galaxy in his spaceship, until the woman he loved disappeared without a trace. Now he’s working for a mysterious stranger, wrangling men and his last piece of cargo might not be entirely human. The trip’s going routinely until the captive escapes his restraints and steals the ship’s escape pod. Retrieving the cargo forces Colt to follow, landing him on the blistering hot world of Harrow and in the town of Wither, where he finds his lost love in desperate need of his help.
Brynn Wight’s world is in turmoil and Colt is the only chance the people of her town have of surviving. She understands his anger and doesn’t expect him to forgive her; she just hopes his sense of justice is still strong enough to care what happens to the townspeople under her protection. Someone is dumping feral creatures on the planet surface; mindless animals that kill anything unprotected as soon as the sun sets every day. It’s only a matter of time until the town’s defenses are breached and if something isn’t done to stop them, every human on the planet will die.
Wither, by author Yolanda Sfetsos, is the first in her new Sci-Fi / Futuristic space cowboy series, Recast. The book’s a fast paced and exciting read that jumps out of the starting gate from the first pages and races to a satisfying end that leads nicely into the next release. I must admit I didn’t know what to expect with such an unusual mix of genres, but Ms. Sfetsos pulls them together into a cohesive and believable whole. Then there’s the fantastic cover. Who doesn’t like a bare-chested cowboy? Add in a traditional six-gun against an outer space background and you have just what’s needed to catch a reader’s attention.
Ms. Sfetsos has done a marvelous job with world building. The planet Harrow and the town of Wither are so vividly described, I could almost see them and the same goes for the feral creatures terrorizing the townspeople. Her characters are equally well constructed, and learning about Colt and Brynn was like peeling away the layers on an onion, each one leading to something new and unexpected. Despite the pain of their parting, the passion and desire between these two former lovers is still as blistering hot and passionate as before. Colt, in true alpha fashion, wants his woman back and he isn’t willing to let anyone or anything stand in his way.

The twists and turns are as numerous, as the secondary characters are few; the most important ones being Ace, Young and our villain. Every time I turned a page, it seemed like the story took off in a direction I didn’t expect. That’s a sign of a great story and storyteller, as far as I’m concerned. I look forward to seeing what happens with the next release in this new and intriguing series.
