Hilde has been shunned, feared and ridiculed her entire life by the people of her small village and all because of her strange eyes and prophetic dreams of the future. After killing one attacker and wounding another, Hilde flees into the wilderness where she wanders alone for days, only to be attacked again but this time by a large, clawed shadowed creature. Her rescuers are men from a dream, the legendary wizard Ilfayne and his warrior companion, Regin. These two men change her life, leading her from one dangerous adventure to another, finally giving her an understanding of what she is…half Human and half Kyrbodan. Despite Ilfayne’s surly disposition and cynical personality, Hilde finally has a friend for the first time in her life…a man who doesn’t recoil from the sight of her and that means everything to her.
Ilfayne has been alone and feared for over four thousand years, so when he finds Hilde, its like a breath of fresh air to his withering soul, opening his heart to friendship and love for the first time since before the Mage Wars. He’d do anything to keep her safe and just when he thinks he has a chance of making a life with her, her Kyrbodan blood throws a wrench in his plans when she suddenly finds herself bound to a man she doesn’t know and doesn’t love. As fate would have it, Kyrbodan’s only mate once and to deny the bond means her certain death. Either way he’s lost her. Things only get worse when an enemy from Ilfayne’s ancient past resurfaces, determined to destroy him and anything or anyone he cares for. His feelings for Hilde make him vulnerable…she is his bane.
Ilfayne’s Bane is the first in an exciting and complicated fantasy series, Oathcursed, by author Julia Knight. Its intricate plot is filled with vivid details, sound world building, and seamlessly integrated background information vital to understanding why the characters react as they do, thus moving the tale ever forward. It has multiple intriguing primary and secondary characters that are important to a storyline that moves through cultures and kingdoms, and who range from peasants and kings, to warriors, wizards, and various creatures who bring pain, death and destruction.
Hilde is an interesting woman caught between two cultures, neither who wants to claim her. She starts off a frightened young woman who’s scared of her own shadow, and over the course of the book changes into a determined woman capable of fighting at the side of her companions. Ilfayne is by far the most complicated person in the book, and you learn little tidbits of information about him and his past as the story unfolds. He’s much more than he appears on the surface, and most of his actions serve to save his heart from pain. Regin is an honorable warrior…a dependable and loyal friend who would just as soon end his long existence. Hunter is in pain, the death of the woman he loves nearly crippling him. These are just a few examples of the complex personalities Ms. Knight has brought together to battle evil in this fantasy epic.
Add to this betrayal, abuse, murder, fear, suspicion, and hopelessness and you have the elements needed for a page turning keeper that you won’t want to miss. I look forward to the next installment of this new series.
