Airman Bryce Callahan graduated top of his class for his squadron and is now ready to report to his new duty station, Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, Wyoming. His hard work has earned him a position at the missile silo. Bryce knows the armed forces still work under a “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy and hides his desire for men, but one shower with Sergeant Todd Claymore undermines his efforts.
Todd Claymore is an only child who chose life in the military over dealing with an overbearing father. His military career is precious to him so he tries to make sure OSI has no reason to knock on his door. Already drawn to Bryce, Todd decides to step out on a limb and explore their mutual attraction after witnessing Bryce’s reaction to him in his entire naked splendor.
As training partners, they spend a great deal of time together in a professional manner. This allows precious moments to explore their compatibility. Over the months, the friendship blossoms into a romance that adds stability to the men’s lives. That stability will help them function during a period when the peace is broken with the Soviet Union; when commandos breach the U.S. border. Whether they are there by direct order of the Soviet government or working as a rogue unit is anyone’s guess but they will test Todd and Bryce’s abilities to fight, survive and perform their trained duties.
Def Con One takes us into the lives of two gay military men who love what they do professionally, and find themselves drawn into wartime events. The thought of a nuclear war is not pretty, but Bryce and Todd understand their jobs and will do what is necessary to protect their country. John Simpson gives a detailed military perspective that made me feel as if I was actually walking on the base, saluting the higher ranked officers and dealing with the a war that could mean the end of the world. The characters have a wonderfully balanced relationship. A strong supporting cast and detailed setting make this book an incredible read. There is action, suspense, a touch of humor, and steamy erotic scenes throughout this story. Def Con One will become a part of your re-read collection, especially if you love military gay romances.
