Lydia and Chase Tanner have purchased their dream house in Darling, Ohio. Chase seems like a thoroughly nice guy, an architect in love with his wife and without hidden secrets, But Lydia represses the horrors of being raised by a drunk, losing her first love, and even worse.

The house has a history. Vivian Hager thought she was being watched when she lived there. Jane Winslow saw spooky visions in the mirror.

But the Tanners seem more open to ghostly interactions. Lydia has visions of a young girl and a black servant who might be buried in the garden. The spirit Clare has a childhood filled with more love and protection than her own, and Lydia wants to know more.

Chase is entranced with their “pet” ghost and wants to learn more about her. Meanwhile, the spirit of Clare is taking over Lydia’s memories -- and perhaps her life. Gradually, a more dangerous side of the spirit emerges.

Clare has become obsessed with motherhood, but was unable to conceive. She becomes a bit too domestic for my tastes, but the story as a gripping paranormal edge. There are some interesting takes on both secrets and the afterlife. The emotions and goals of the spirit are fascinating. This is an engrossing read.
