John is working himself to death and under orders of the doctor, takes a year off to relax. Deciding to stay in town, John leases a small bookstore. What he hopes will be an uneventful year turns out to be anything but as he struggles with the many challenges in front of him. One of those challenges is David, a homeless man the previous owner let stay in the store during business hours. At first wanting to toss David out, John is talked into letting him stay by Jamie, the owner’s son, who stayed to help John out.

Life on the streets has been very hard for David. Suffering from emotional problems, trying to survive the best he can, David no longer trusts those around him. Knowing the new manager wants to get rid of him, David is surprised when John and Jamie encourage him to stay at John‘s place rather than out in the freezing weather. Taking off before John wakes, David has no plans of coming back. Things do not work out that way and soon the two men are together again. As David struggles to pull his life back together, the relationship between the men grows into love. Nevertheless, things do not always go smoothly as David has many set backs and John learns what was once important no longer is.

Isabelle Rowan pulls no punches as she brings us the story of David and the life he has lived. The reader will not be able to help root for these two men as they face the struggles to their relationship. A Note in the Margin is one of those heart wrenching stories that will stay with the reader long after they finish.
