Kieran Frost’s plan for a night of three way sex with Rhett and Ethan is changed when Rhett’s daughter drags Kieran to a bar to meet college student Alex Corbin.  Finding Alex to be very appealing, Kieran undertakes the challenge of introducing Alex into actually experiencing his natural inclination.

The Closer You Get is the sequel to The Distance Between Us.  The theme is self-discovery for Alex but as the story progresses, it also becomes somewhat of a discovery for Kieran as well.  The storyline illustrates all the first experiences for Alex; first kiss as well as first experimental sex variations to determine Alex’s degree of pleasure.  Over a period of time, Kieran and Alex declare their love for each other, which is not totally convincing; considering Alex is indecisive about everything along with Kieran, who is deeply rooted in his fear of commitment. The lack of emotional growth demonstrated between the characters gives the impression that Kieran and Alex remained in a friends with benefits relationship with the sex lessons continuing until one or the other decides to move on.

L.A. Witt has created a charming story that fans of sweet romance will find enjoyable.

Kyle was kicked out of his home at an early age.  When life on the streets became too rough, he thought his older brother would be there to help him.  Only things did not work out that way and Kyle finds himself the prisoner of an abusive boyfriend.  Five years later, his life is still a living hell and then his boss shows up to help.

Nikki McCoy’s My Forever is a very interesting paranormal story.  The characters, especially Kyle, will grab you from the get-go.  As the author goes into detail about the abuse the young man suffered, his actions and fears become believable.  This is especially true when Kyle opens himself up to the feelings he is developing for Lucas and his need to be dominated.

Lucas has his own issues.  Members of the Tsielen race, Lucas and others like him have been on earth for hundreds of years.  As a member of his race’s security force, he has done things he regrets.  When his leader turns bad, Lucas ran rather than going against his beliefs.  Lucas is a warrior, his dominate persona comes out from the beginning and it is easy to see that these two men belong together.  I liked watching the interaction between the men.  Not only does Kyle’s gentleness and innocence call out to Lucas, but so does his strength.  The chemistry between the men is intense and heats up the pages quite well.

There are many secondary characters that help fill out the story.  The many twists and turns the plot takes will keep the reader entertained.  If readers are looking for something in the paranormal field, but are getting a little tired of the normal shape-shifters and vamps, then they should give this story a try as Ms. McCoy’s My Forever is one story I will be reading again.

Vicente is a rather shy man who comes from a rigid Mexican-American family that doesn’t approve of homosexuality. That doesn’t stop him from working two jobs to provide care for his wheelchair- bound father, but it does interfere from him having any kind of a personal life. Getting the chance to date William, a man who tutored him in high school, is Vicente’s dream come true.

After graduating college, William Fortin accepts a job as a forensic scientist in his hometown, allowing him to be near his family. It also gives him the opportunity to get reacquainted with his high school crush, Vicente Vasquez. It doesn’t take long for William to realize that Vicente is the man of his dreams, but can he offer his new lover a life free of financial worries without making him lose his self-respect? Can Vicente deal with his traditional family learning the truth?

Loving Vicente is release six in Serena Yates’ Men of Riverside series and it’s a nicely written story of two men getting together after years of separation. Although it can be considered a standalone, reading the books in order will provide a greater understanding of continuing character relationships.

Vicente and William have well developed personalities and I liked both immediately. William is a typical absent-minded professor and Vicente is a hard-working blue collar kind of guy. Both have drive and ambition and while different in many ways, make the perfect counterparts to each both, inside and outside the bedroom. I really enjoyed the build up to the relationship…how Ms. Yates expressed their mutual nervousness when they meet after so many years. It was well done and I could almost feel their anxiety vibrating off the page. Be assured that when they finally get past their apprehension, its blistering hot sex all the way.

The homophobic family situation with Vicente is tense and sprinkled throughout the story. While his obnoxious brother, Felipe, is seen often, the wheelchair bound father, while mentioned frequently, doesn’t really make an appearance, which I found strange. Felipe does make threats, turning into the villain of the story, so by the end of the story, he’s become a real danger to both Vicente and William. Ms. Yates does a nice job with the action packed scene where our bad guy gets his just desserts, and manages to bring multiple characters into the satisfying resolution while doing it.  Enjoy.

Keith Martin, an assumed name, is desperately trying not to get car sick as the US Marshal drives him to yet another safe house.  Finally they reach the ranch located in the northern part of Montana, owned and operated by Tanner Bruenig.

In Under A Rock, the plot features the budding romance between Keith and Tanner as they work the ranch together.  The setting is a large cattle ranch, yet the only characters on site, other than Keith and Tanner, is the animals.  The scenario suggests an action plot, however the only action comes at the end of the story and ex-navy seal Tanner is not the hero.  The expected suspense build-up is not present.  The most interesting character in the storyline is a horse named Foster.  Upon first meeting Keith, Foster decided Keith is his favorite person.  Foster follows Keith around like a big puppy looking for treats and a pat on the head.

India Harper’s Under A Rock is a sweet romance with a dash of humor. I enjoyed the antics of the horse most of all.

Paxton Chambers lived from hand to mouth for years, despising what he was forced to do in order to survive, so when he was offered a job on the Lady Blue, he jumps at the chance to better his life. Living on the ship is different and it gives him a good friend in Gigi, but he has trouble keeping up with their odd speech patterns, making him think he’s not as intelligent as everyone else.

But crew member, Colt Walking Cloud likes everything about the little blue-skinned man and when the deadly sniper discovers Pax is his mate, he set out to win the skittish man’s heart. When the Lady Blue is infested with slug-like worms that carry a lethal mucous, Colt will do anything to keep his mate safe. The crew needs to eradicate the pests before they spread throughout the ship, and the only one getting in their way is his kind-hearted Pax, who doesn’t want the slimy creatures killed.

Pax’s Blues is the second release in Lady Blue Crew, the futuristic shape-shifter series by Lynn Hagen and Stormy Glenn. It’s another entertaining, lighthearted and fun read. The author development of the character personalities is nicely done. Pax is a quiet and reserved guy but he’s cute too, and watching his frustration as he tries to understand some of what is going on around him is a hoot. He just doesn’t get the odd pieces of conversation…the slang…and it makes him feel like an idiot.

Colt is big, dominant and possessive, likes everything about Pax and wants to claim his little blue-skinned mate but allows Pax the time he needs to get comfortable with him first. But once claimed…their sex life is hot…and frequent. Then there’s the weird and wacky situations the crew manages to get into. This time, it’s problems with slugs with a lethal mucous like slime. The scenes with Pax and Gigi scanning the ship while holding spatulas from the gallery had me chuckling. I look forward to the next release, Imlay’s Cure.

Ending up at the hospital to help his younger brother Shem, the last thing Ham expects is to find one of his mates.  Imagine his surprise when a sexy firefighter steps out of the elevator and the two end up in the supply closet shortly after.  Even more surprising is when he meets his other mate, Luca.

Kitty in the Middle is the fifth book in the Purrfect Mates series.  Once again, the story centers on a member of the Cowell family.  Ham is the oldest brother of the second litter and as such, is used to his brothers coming to him for help.  Kale is a firefighter and friend of Diets.  Because of his mother, Kale is not the least bit surprised when Ham tells him about shifters and mates.  These two heat up the pages from the get-go and the ease in which they come together is seen once again when their other mate, Luca, shows up.

Luca was rescued from one of the Hunter circus’ and, as can be expected, has some major issues, least of which is the fact that his brothers are still being held.  Kale and Ham have to work hard to keep Luca together and the problems the men face come across realistically.  Fans of this series are sure to enjoy this latest story and if you have not yet tried one of Ms. Flynn’s books, give this series a try.

Bulletproof

Money troubles during the recession force Jory Harcourt and his partner to close their business and he goes to work as an event planner and matchmaker. It’s not a job he enjoys and his mouth and attitude gets him in hot water and he gets fired. In typical Jory fashion, it’s not long before he finds himself stuck between two men who wants him…a trust fund baby and a drug-smuggling criminal…neither who want to believe he’s in a committed relationship. And things only get worse when Jory’s undercover husband, Sam, turns up working for the smuggler.

Jory’s in over his head and suddenly he’s in danger so on the advice of his brother, partner and the FBI, heads to Hawaii. Except a tropical paradise isn’t far enough away, if someone wants you dead, and a serious car accident threatens his quality of life. In its aftermath, can Jory and Sam’s relationship stand firm…are they really bulletproof?

Bulletproof is release five in Mary Calmes’ Matter of Time series and it takes up months after the last book left off.  Note: You need to read the others first.  It’s well written, has a complicated plot with plenty of interesting secondary characters…some old, some new…fun, bantering dialogue, lots of action, danger, and blistering hot sex. When it starts, Sam’s already gone undercover working on his federal task force and Jory’s missing his husband/partner terribly.

Let me just say upfront that I love Jory and Sam together, so I was thrilled to learn Ms. Calmes had written an addition to the series. And I’m glad she didn’t change Jory’s character...to show he’d grown…it would have been disappointing. There’s just something about Jory and his non-existent brain/mouth filter that’s appealing and it only adds to his endearing flakey, flighty personality that she writes so well. And back to the Sam issue. I adore the big hunky detective and how much he loves Jory, so I admit to being disappointed that he was ‘away’ undercover for so much of the story. He was spoken of, see in flashes a few times, managed to be with Jory for a few minutes or hours during the first half or so, but that’s it until near the end when he makes a permanent reappearance. But when he does, he and Jory are just as committed, intense and passionate as always. Take it from me the scene where they reunite is great and shows a couple of the guys who wants Jory just who he belongs to.

Things have gone from scary to dangerous and worse with the smuggler/bad guy that Jory rejected, so you know there has to been an action packed black moment and Ms. Calmes gives us a good one. Without giving out too many details, I’ll just say that its heart wrenching, filled with fear, pain and angst, and could have life altering effects on Jory and Sam’s relationship. So, get this book and read it. You’ll enjoy it. I did. Oh, and if I could have a wish, it would be another book in the near future, the next one featuring Jory, Sam and kids. That I’d like to see.

Vampire Daniel Valente is in an emotionally dark place after returning to England.  Surviving a vampire battle has caused Daniel’s past fears to be resurrected.  Fortunately, the two vampires Daniel trust come to his rescue again, Daniel’s sire Titus and Ryunosuke, the man Daniel finally realizes is his eternal mate.

Enduring Instincts is the second book in the excellent Instincts Series.  The well written plot is emotionally gripping with illustrations of jealousy, loneliness, suspense, humor, loveable interaction and exquisite sensuality.  The storyline also gives a detailed description of Ryu’s human history, as well as the relationship between Titus and Ryu.   The in depth characters fully immerse the reader into the illustrious vampire society.  Daniel is charismatic with a touch of snarky, deceptively strong, intelligent and musically talented.  Because of his connection to Titus, an Ancient, Daniel has always been wary of other vampires who may view Daniel as a way to move up in vampire status.  This is especially true now that Daniel is attempting to live independently of Titus.

Ryu has secretly loved Daniel for hundreds of years, yet he refuses to reveal his love without receiving some recognition from Daniel that the love is returned.  Ryu is a stubborn and honorable samurai.  However, Ryu’s code of honor is no match for Titus’ gift of persuasion when Titus request Ryu’s help in protecting Daniel. The element of suspense is exhibited when a fanatical vampire attempts to turn his delusions of grandeur into a reality. The characters from Natural Instincts are skillfully blended into Enduring Instincts; even Andreas’ cats, Lynx and Hemingway, make an appearance.

S.J. Frost has a gift for creating captivating sophisticated vampires with an exceptionally distinctive quality of humanity. Reading Enduring Instincts is equivalent to indulging in vastly pleasurable decadent visualizations.

Cass is tired of keeping his past a secret.  When he begins seeing the ghost of his dead mate, Cass knows he has no choice but to take off.  Going home to pack he runs into Logan, his other mate and completely falls apart.

Cheetah in Charge is book six in the Purrfect Mates series.  This story is a complete turnaround from the last story.  Whereas the mating and relationship in Kitty in the Middle went so smoothly, Cheetah in Charge is dark and full of angst.  Cass is dealing with the death of his mate, something he feels responsible for.  Keeping the tragedy a secret from his family has caused Cass to reach his breaking point.  When both his mates show up at the same time, Cass goes over the edge.  I wondered how the author planned to introduce Cass’s mates when one is supposedly dead.  The way Merrick is introduced worked perfectly, although it also opens the door for more problems.  Logan is just as much of a problem as Merrick.  When Logan and Cass first meet, the vampire has a boyfriend, leaving Cass feeling even more rejected.

These three men have a lot of issues in front of them and, at times, it looks as if there is no happy ending in sight.  I like that the author allowed Cass to go through his grief the way she did.  The misunderstandings that Logan, Cass and Merrick must overcome has to take second fiddle to the ongoing problems with the hunters.  The author also throws in some new twists, opening the door for some interesting new characters.

While the next book in the series is not centered around the Cowells, there are several more brothers looking for mates so I hope this gang will be back again.

Inland Empire

Recovered from his injuries, Agent Nick O'Malley heads to Riverside California, center of the Inland Empire to visit his lover, Det. Brandon Carr and pick up his vehicle from the impound lot. Nicky’s not there long before his impressive computer skills gets him sucked into the middle of Brandon’s task force investigation. But being in such close proximity to Brandon with so many cops around constantly threatens to out his lover. The question is whether their relationship can survive the strain of working together or the danger of the criminal they’re tracking.

Inland Empire is the second release in James Buchanan’s series Taking the Odds and it takes up a few weeks after the first book left off. Due to the continuation of the relationship between Nick and Brandon, it’s advisable to read Cheating Chance first. Please note that this story was first released by another publisher in 2009.

This book has a lot going for it. At its heart is the relationship of Brandon and Nick which, at times, is hot and passionate and at others, is strained and intense. It’s balanced nicely against a police procedural as they work with a large task force investigating a gang murder, prostitution, illegal gambling and human trafficking ring.  Add in some realistic secondary characters, lots of action, homophobia from multiple sources and plenty of misunderstandings and you’ve got everything needed to keep your attention. And the conflicts between Brandon and Nick just keep coming to the point where Nick is ready to break up with his lover because he’s acting like a jerk. There’s also some fun and lighthearted, bantering conversations between Brandon and his partner Weaver and even Nick and Weaver. Take it from me. I enjoyed this one and I think you will too.

When Anna was a firefighter, she was burned after a falling in a burning building.  Blake, Ryder and Tucker are looking for her, not realizing she is at Blake’s aunt’s house.

Healing in Paradise is the tenth book in the Paradise series.  While each adds some history about the town and its shifters, this particular story line is dealing with siblings finding their way back home after an internal struggle with two factions in the community.  The author shows a lot of insight into the guilt and struggles siblings have when they are separated at an age that they remember, but don’t know where their siblings are. There are definitely some abandonment issues that all seem to have.

I actually enjoyed this story a bit more than some of the previous ones because I felt the author created a more realistic feel to Anna’s life.   I also had to laugh at the picture Ms. Xander created about Blake’s aunt as I actually have an aunt that is fairly eccentric.  One point toward the end did mar the story as Anna was confused for her twin, though the four were actually going through the mating process.   I am looking forward to reading about the fourth sister in the future.

Dr. Gordon Digby was called in to help the rescued shifters at the Stoneridge Pack.  As a therapist, he’s more than happy to help the others, but as a shifter, he knows there is no help for him.  The last thing he really needs in his life is a mate, yet that’s just what he finds when he meets Detective Grady Stryker.

Accepting his Animal is the third story in the Wolves of Stoneridge series, it is also one I have been eagerly  awaiting.  The story is about two shifters, Gordon Digby and Grady Stryker.  Neither man is an official member of the Stoneridge Pack, yet both have close ties to it.  While fans of this series know what animal form Grady is, Gordon was a mystery, with only a couple of hints by the author.  I must admit that I did not expect the form he took, yet once it was revealed the authors previous clues were obvious.  It also made Gordon’s reluctance to change understandable.

As for the romantic connection between the two men, Gordon and Grady fit together really well.  While Gordon may hesitate, Grady knows what he wants and goes after it.  I liked watching the two of them together.  Of course, there is still the issue of the poachers and the author threw in a few twists and turns on that subject.  We are also introduced to the next couple to get a story and, once again, the author has left me wanting more.  This is a fun series and fans of shape-shifter stories should give it a try.

Cat shifter Sam Finn must travel back to his childhood home at the worst possible time.  Sam’s adoptive wolf shifter father has died and it is full moon.  Adding to Sam’s grief is a run in with his childhood tormentor, wolf shifter Gus Fieri.  However, meeting again after years apart, the tormentor has turned into the seducer and it is Sam Gus wants to seduce.

Just Like Cats and Dogs has a superb plot of surviving against the odds.  The romantic story is interwoven with humorous interaction between the characters, playful animal antics as well as exceptionally sizzling intimate scenes.  The characters are convincing.  Sam has always felt like an outcast, at home among the wolf pack and in the city living among the cat shifters who reject Sam because he has a wolf scent.  Gus is an outcast because he is gay.  Although Gus is an Alpha, he never attempting to gain that status within the pack.  The storyline has several dramatic scenarios included that added a touch of intensity.

BA Tortuga has a talent for creating very descriptive characters.  I could actually visualize Sam and Gus rolling around on the floor playing in their animal forms.   Just Like Cats and Dogs is a marvelous saga that I enjoyed immensely.

When his father died three years ago, Tom Halderson inherited his construction company. He’s a carpenter who’d rather be working with wood than struggling to find projects to keep the business afloat. Things aren’t good and when his estranged brother, Derek, arrives demanding what he’s not entitled to, Tom and his partner realize they’re in trouble. Letting Derek move into the family house doesn’t help and neither does giving him a job…he messes everything up so when he’s fired, Derek’s furious and swears to get even.

After his mother commits suicide, Matt Lanford arrives in town to renovate his grandfather’s old house.  His plans are to fix it up and then sell it, so he can return to his life in Africa. But meeting Tom completely changes his plans and makes him think of settling down, for the first time in his life. The question is whether Matt fills the needs of a stay-at-home Tom?

The Carpenter is the fourth release in Serena Yates’ Workplace Encounters series. It’s another well paced and written addition to the family of books, this one covering the crippling aftermath of sexual abuse. Not only does Ms. Yates deal with this subject sensitively but she does it while juggling a new love interest and with a lying, deceitful brother out to destroy a man already victimized. To these plot threads, she adds in some great secondary characters, mixes in lots of angst and passion and comes up with a believably developing relationship while dealing with Derek and his betrayal.

I liked these two. Tom’s lovable, charming, hardworking and artistic. Matt is more dominant, successful, outgoing and self-assured. They make a pair of perfect opposites and Ms. Yates did a nice job developing their personalities and how they interact with each other. I really like that she took the physical part of the relationship slow, allowing the wounded Tom to have the time he needed to get comfortable. This allows his love to blossom under Matt’s tender care.

The problem with Derek is ongoing throughout the story, but doesn’t overshadow the romance.  The resolution of the problems facing the construction company is handled satisfactorily.  My only niggle is that in the last portion we didn’t get to find out what actually happened to the culprits…Derek and his co-conspirators. I was left wondering.

Susan Chapman followed in her deceased father’s footsteps and became a prosecuting attorney.  She loves her job and is devoted to putting criminals away, until her car blows up with her best friend inside.  When she wakes up in the hospital days later, she finds FBI agent Stone Watson assigned as her bodyguard.  Susan wants to refuse the offer of any assistance but doesn’t.  Later when she learns he has ties to the mob, she is torn between trusting him and abandoning him.

Stone grew up living among the mob and now has distanced himself from them, knowing that he can lose his job if the FBI finds out about his past.  When the mob boss is executed for the crime of murder, someone goes on a killing spree, starting with the jurors that convicted him and last on his list is Susan Chapman.  Stone must keep her safe and he soon finds them on the run, unable to settle down in each place they go in an attempt to hide.

Verdict is quite a story with so many twists and turns, it’s hard to figure out who the villains are.  I truly enjoyed reading this book, learning more about the main characters and the mob families.  The villains are very tricky and they managed to put the blame on someone innocent.

Susan’s personality is impressive, lacking at times but strong when needed.  Her immediate liking of Stone gives her a positive attitude about him, which should help when they are alone.  Stone is not a trusting person, yet he finds himself admiring Susan’s courage throughout their attempts to keep ahead of the villains who are chasing them.  I really admired both Susan and Stone for their ability to overcome each trial they faced.

This is a new author for me and I really enjoyed the suspenseful, mind boggling mystery that kept me wondering all the way to the end of the story.  I look forward to reading more from Ms. Monroe in the future.

Evangeline is told by her uncle that she is to marry Lord Ravenscroft (Raven) so he can get his inheritance and travel.  Raven has to marry before he is thirty if he is to gain his inheritance.

Sanguinarian is a very different vampire story.  The author created a wonderful vampire that would fit in to today’s society with our almost 24 hour world.  I actually enjoyed this book as I usually do not read very much historical fiction, regardless of genre.  I actually could sympathize with Evangeline as she tried to get out of the marriage because she did have some solid plans to make a respectable living for that time period.

As this story progresses, you see some of the changes that both Evangeline and Raven undergo.  Both realize they have not really taken the time to get to know each other and Raven is so used to getting his way , he has never really had to play the gentleman. The author brings out the fact that in those times, reputation makes all the difference in the world about how you are perceived.  I did have to laugh at a couple of the secondary characters.  Evangeline’s friend/housekeeper was one; she almost seemed at times fanatic about propriety.

Sanguinarian is one historical I will be reading again.
