In the Gezane Universe King Melchior of the Bhresaya, a demon-like race, has grown tired of endless wars with the Humans. He offers a peace treaty with the most powerful human kingdom. The only condition is the unborn princess will become his bride. From the moment of her birth, attempts are made on her life. The first attack from the Bhresaya failed when young princess Serenity showed no fear and asked questions about her future husband. This revelation caused a change of heart for assassin Chigaru who then became her first guard, as time passed, other assassins also turned into guards to their future queen. Serenity’s Bhresaya guards were known as the Hell Hounds, a title they proudly embraced.
Princess Serenity grew up looking forward to love and marriage to King Melchior, but Melchior married Serenity to solidify the peace between the Bhresyas and the Humans, or so he thought. After the wedding, Melchior informed Serenity that he had no intention of having heirs with her. Serenity is devastated by this rejection and after months of being a trophy wife, returns to her home. With Serenity gone, Melchior is forced to face his denials of love for her and the fact that she is his true mate.

Serenity is a unique and well written compelling story of the power of love and the sting of rejection. In this very creative universe of D. Renee Bagby, the issues of prejudice are showcased with the difference of species. The Bhresyas are displayed in a variety of skin colors; Melchior’s skin tone is blue, while Serenity has a human brown skin tone. The obstacles of an interracial relationship are diminished with the acceptance of the love they are destined to share. The emotional journey is heart wrenching, the storyline is insightful and this is an incredible story that I enjoyed immensely.
