Lieutenant Fallon Roxbury is called to investigate the murder scene of a young man, who was killed in a rather bizarre method. Before this murder is solved, another victim is found. Fallon encounters what appears to be a young girl who leads him to Sundown, a man Fallon assumes is a hustler. Each time Fallon visits Sundown, he is convinced there is something different about Sundown. When Sundown reveals his real self, Fallon is not certain what to believe anymore.

The Back Stairs has an interesting mystery plot surrounding Sundown and his possible association with the murder victims. The storyline gives a general idea of the characters; nevertheless I feel that more expressive characterization would have produced additional interest. Fallon is a loner; he works long hours. His work partner seems to be his only friend. His love for dogs is his strongest expression of feelings. Fallon’s attraction to Sundown is sexual. Sundown is a shape-shifter, who is hiding among the humans because it suits his curiosity about gay men. Sundown’s feelings are those of neutrality as well as exploration.

The main focus of KC Kendricks’ The Back Stairs is crime investigation procedures, which I found enjoyable.
