Brian and Stephen have been friends for some time now. Their jobs as an EMT and Doctor give them something in common. But what happens when Brian, who is gay and always had a thing for his straight friend, finds out that Stephen is not only going through a divorce but isn’t as straight as Brian thought he was?

Emergency is the second book in the A City Hospital series by Drew Zachary. This time around, the author brings the reader the story of Brian, an EMT, and Stephen, a Doctor. The author uses the longtime friendship of these two men as the building blocks for their relationship. When Stephen comes out to Brian and decides to pursue a more intimate relationship with him, he does not waste any time. The passion between these two entertaining characters is both intense and sweet, as the author uses these times as one of the ways to show the depth of feelings the men have for each other. Just because Brian and Stephen were already friends when their relationship changed does not mean things will be easy for them however.

That Stephen understood what it was he needed in his life, made the changes, and then didn’t worry about what others thought is one of the things I enjoyed about this story. That the author allows the characters to feel some insecurity over all the changes they have been going through lends credibility to the story, making it entertaining for the reader who will want to stay around to see how things turn out.

Although I would have liked to have seen a little more angst in the story, as well as a visit from the characters of the first book, I still found Emergency a fun read and can’t wait to see what the author will bring to this series next.
