The last night before embarking on their new careers, Lane and Matt make love for the first time. Best friends since childhood, Lane and Matt have secretly loved each other for years. However, when Lane awakens the next morning, Matt is gone. Separated for five years, it takes a hurricane to bring them together again.

Pinky Swear is a charming young love story. The plot is well written with interesting characters on a journey of discovery. Matt grew up with an abusive father until the age of sixteen when his father discovered Matt was gay and kicked him out. Matt is smart and hard working. He had a special bond with Lane that went beyond friendship. Because of his father, Matt’s self-esteem and self-image had been destroyed; Matt did not consider himself worthy of Lane, so he behaved in a way designed to drive Lane away. Being shy with a stutter, Lane has silently waited years for Matt to notice him as more than a friend. In the four college years Lane and Matt shared an apartment together, Lane had a few boyfriends but none of them seemed to measure up to Matt in Lane’s mind. The New Orleans setting is realistic.

However, I did find it hard to imagine two young men claiming to love each other, as well as years of living together, and not having any intimate contact or even banter about their feelings. Lynn Lorenz has created an enjoyable mildly emotional saga.
