Jake Keyes is the bass player for Pure Wildfire, the hottest rock band on the planet. He’s on an extended vacation in Hawaii when he learns that his wife is dead. Even though he and Cheryl married for convenience sake, he immediately hops on a jet and heads to Texas. Once there, he learns that Cheryl’s best friend and business partner, Terri Gilpatrick, is the prime suspect. Through a psychic link, he’s quickly convinced she’s not the killer; making him determined to protect her from harm, prove her innocence to the law, and catch the true murderer. He’d also love to know what she’d think if she discovers he isn’t human, but a shape-shifting firebird, and Cheryl might have been killed to get to him.

Terri has been friends with Cheryl for years, and she refuses to confirm or deny the violent and hateful accusations that they were lovers. When Cheryl is killed, Terri finds herself arrested for murder. Even though the sheriff says he believes in her innocence, it’s not until Jake arrives in town and he volunteers to post her bail that she finally gets released from jail. Danger abounds and it’s up to Jake to protect Terri from a brutal killer, a group of racist purists and a dangerous and demented stalker.

Moonfire is the third release in Ms. Connolly’s ongoing Pure Wildfire series, and this well-written and fast-paced story is another winner. While it follows characters introduced in the first two books, this one can definitely be read as a stand-alone story.

I guess the first word that comes to mind is…WOW! The plot is incredible and Ms. Connolly has created a story that keeps your attention from beginning to end. The other two stories dealt more with the music industry aspect of Pure Wildfire. This intriguing and original tale leaves the music on the periphery and concentrates more on the personal as Jake and Terri deal with murder, mayhem, danger and hate. The emotional and psychic connection between them is intense, the physical attraction instantaneous, and the sex phenomenally hot. I loved the manner in which Terri discovered that Jake was a shape-shifter and how readily she accepted what he was. The ability of an author to keeping me guessing is always appreciated, and Ms. Connolly did just that with her multitude of unexpected twists and turns. Read this one and enjoy!
