American book hunter Colin Bliss, on loan to England’s Imperial Arcane Library, is denied the opportunity to exercise his skills for them, so Colin accepts a commission from the Museum of the Literary Occult to find The Sword’s Shadow, a legendary and dangerous witches’ book of old magic spells. However, before he can locate the book, Colin must travel to the remote Isles of Scotland and solve an ancient murder. Imperial Arcane Library’s Magister Septimus Marx is also interested in Colin’s quest and does his best to convince Colin to decline the Museum of the Literary Occult’s offer.

The Darkling Thrush is an excellent example of mystery, fantasy and magic interwoven in a gripping plot that holds you captive from the opening to the very end. The well written plot builds by unveiling clues in each chapter. The true intention of each detailed character is shrouded in secrecy. A faery woman, a sinister adventuress and other creatures all play a key role in the storyline’s design. Colin is a scholar; his published findings are well received in the academic world and this is the only reason Colin accepts the mission. Colin has a natural curiosity and is highly skilled at book hunting. Although his first meeting with Septimus Marx left Colin the impression that Marx did not approve of him, Colin retracted his opinion when Marx seduced Colin on the train journey to Scotland. Because of the service he performs for Imperial Arcane, Marx is very good at hiding his feelings. Marx desired Colin from their first meeting; however his employer seduced Colin first. The more time Marx spent with Colin, the harder it became to resist him. The love Marx felt for Colin, along with their budding relationship, made his job impossible to carry out.

The amazing Josh Lanyon is a master of intrigue with a dash of romance. I thoroughly enjoyed this exhilarating suspense and hope to read more of these fascinating characters in the future.
