There is an instant attraction between warrior Behrin and pacifist Tai. They spend the night before the mission making love, which adds more stress to the already stressful duty Behrin has agreed to. But they return to Mhajav, mission accomplished, and Behrin is faced with yet another problem. Rulik offers Behrin a choice in promotions; he can stay in Mhajav to oversee the amnesty settlement and continue a relationship with Tai or he can be captain of a new space ship and spend months away from the man he loves.
