Yukiko poses as a courtesan in a pleasure house, hoping to attract the attentions of Lord Matsushita, the man she believes is responsible for the death of her older sister, a death that brought shame to her family. Only by killing Matsushita can the family honor be restored. However, her plans are disrupted when Matsushita buys her contract and moves Yukiko into his household as his concubine. The more Yukiko learns about Matsushita, the more she begins to question what she was told. Her mission becomes even more convoluted when she discovers she is a pawn for Matsushita’s enemies with political motives.
Shunga Chronicles: Flight of the Heron is another intriguing installment in the Shunga Chronicles. Yukiko’s only motivation is to redeem her family’s honor; she did not expect to fall in love and Matsushita, who knew the truth of the events, still loved Yukiko and refused to let her leave him. Lizzie Lynn Lee showcases the strict code of honor and the resolutions that was part of the Japanese culture. This is an enjoyable series.
