Thirty-two-year-old Peyton Michaels is writing a series about heroes. She completes her fire training and gets assigned to the crew of Hot Shot firefighter Gabe Cooper. Her interest in Gabe quickly exceeds her interest in journalism.

Peyton's husband Dan died in the line of duty nineteen months ago. She feels both guilt and anger that he left her because of his love for the SWAT team. And Gabe reminds her of Dan. Gabe loves his job. He lives to "face the dragon and kick its ass." Peyton is reluctant to become involved with another man who thrives on danger.

Peyton helps Gabe rescue a group of Girl Scouts and then their own lives are in danger. Things get really interesting when we learn that this killer fire was actually started by an arsonist.

The supporting cast is interesting. Young Kim worships Gabe as a hero. Gabe's ex-wife is in charge of the firefighting crew. And her husband Doug is accused of starting the fire.

The real danger faced by the fire crew, and the connections to actual events in the recent past, make for interesting reading. Fredrick has given us an intriguing mystery and interesting insights into love and life. This action packed novel will keep you on the edge of your seat.
