Retired English businessman Simon Hastings lives two hours away from Paris in a small town in the French countryside. He’s prepared to spend another holiday alone, when he’s surprised by the arrival of his best friend, Alain, who’s driven in from Paris. Simon welcomes Alain for the weekend, but he isn’t so open to the suggestion that their decade-long relationship change to that of lovers and partners. Afraid to destroy the only friendship he has, Simon turns Alain down flat. What he doesn’t seem to remember is the old adage that all’s fair in love and war…and Alain has his mind set on winning not only the battle, but the war for Simon’s heart, any way he can.
The newest book in Jamie Craig’s Calendar Boys series is Vintage, and I have to admit it’s one of my favorites. It’s a bit unusual for an author to have the main characters in a contemporary romance (whether gay or straight) to be pushing fifty, but that’s exactly what happens in this romantic and sexy July release. Alain is, by far, the more outspoken of our guys and watching as he finagles Simon into doing what he wants, via a wager, is nothing less than witty and fun. While Simon is a little grumpy and afraid to change, Alain is vivacious and outgoing, willing to take a chance on them as a couple.
I loved the amount of history supporting Simon and Alain’s long friendship, showing why Simon was unwilling to risk having it destroyed. His fear made him appear more human, just as Alain’s willingness to put his heart on the line did for him. Despite the hurdles of a long-distance relationship, these older men know the value of treasuring what means the most…each other, and adjusting their individual lives accordingly. In the case of Alain and Simon familiarity doesn’t breed contempt; it breeds love, passion, tenderness and caring. Vintage is another enjoyable addition to the Calendar Boys series.
