Defeat is a bitter pill to swallow especially when you’re on the losing side in the world’s political arena. The Voldai’s interrupted war has spawned dragon phobia, as well as hatred for the humans who consort with the dragons amongst their people.  Dragon shape-shifter Marine Captain Danegeld Drake and Navy Lt. Commander Franklin Delano Michaels, a human, have teamed up to flush out the perpetrators plaguing the USS Ronald Reagan naval ship.

Captain's Mate is the first book in the Marine Dragons series. The premise reveals the history of events leading up to the futuristic setting illustrated in the storyline. The plot is an interesting blend of military maneuvers, uninterested leadership along with a touch of romance. The characters are to some extent appealing; however a more in-depth characterization would have been welcome.

Franklin has the personality, in addition to having the qualifications to work with dragons. He speaks their language plus he knows the correct protocol to exhibit respect. These traits are also a benefit to Franklin when he discovers Dane is his mate.

Meeting Franklin is an added bonus, as well as an added worry for Dane. As the dragon leader, Dane is concerned about the numerous attempts to kill the dragons along with their human mates.

Jenn Dease has created an impressive saga. I particularly enjoyed the dragon battle. The plot showcases the realistic prejudices, psychotic extremists as well as the political climate present in the current world we live in.
