Cadence Catherine McGee arrives early for a birthday party, only to find the guest of honor slain and mutilated. She never liked Robert, but his wife, CC’s best friend Debra, has also been attacked. Debra is suffering from spinal cord injuries.
CC vows to find the culprit when the paralyzed Debra is whisked away from the hospital. She uses what little information she can to find about Robert, and heads to South Africa to find her friend.
On the plane, she meets handsome Travis Goddard. He works for the Department of Natural Resources and lines her up with a job. CC is a kick-ass helicopter pilot with military experience. Carter Wescott is an ex-DEA officer working at the same airfield. He really lights CC’s fire, but she keeps her mission a secret from everyone.
It’s an interesting story, but I was put off by CC’s assumptions and found several details puzzling. She’s barely scraping by with her crop-dusting business, but travels to South Africa. How do you get a paralyzed woman out of a hospital without attracting attention? Do they really chase poachers with heavy ammunition? Doesn’t this endanger the ecosystem and the animals?
CC has lost both parents and fiancé. This is why she refuses to let her childhood friend die. I really did not feel the special closeness between the two women or any real urgency on CC’s part to find her “sister.”
The husband-wife team that authored this book gave us a lot of action, but the flow of action seemed disjointed. I did not feel a strong emotional commitment to the heroine. Carter, however, was an intriguing leading man.
