Clark Stevens is Cal’s golden boy, the school’s star quarterback who can do no wrong. Everyone, from his family to his girlfriend and the scouts, want a piece of him. While Clark struggles to please those around him, no one stops to think what Clark might want or need. When Clark ends up in the hospital, he meets Jody Williams, a slightly older doctor who knows absolutely nothing about football.
Jody Williams is gay and proud of it. After his last relationship ended tragically, Jody shied away from future relationships by putting all his energy into his medical career. When the young quarterback comes into the emergency room, Jody is surprised by the sudden rush of feelings he begins to develop for him.
The two men develop a friendship that soon grows to love; however, their relationship is not an easy one as many outside forces try to tear them apart.
I enjoyed reading Horizons. While the book is filled with angst, there are some light and tender moments. The author does a wonderful job showing the love the two men feel for each other even as Clark comes to terms with being gay. The author does just as well with the secondary characters, whether portraying intense hate or complete support. I am sure this will not be the last book I read by this author.
