Ray Jenkins has enjoyed a genuine friendship with Eric Richards for years. His decision to return to war has Eric reeling from shock and letting his guard down enough to show Ray the passion lurking beneath. Ray doesn’t understand these new emotions, but they are too strong to ignore. Two years later, Ray is sure of what he wants, the question is can Eric believe his once straight friend is ready for a commitment?
Breaking Ground is a story about second chances, love, learning to live after the war and coming to terms with your true desires. Ava Rose Johnson introduces us to Ray and Eric. The two men are wonderful friends, which makes a relationship between them plausible. They have a deep connection and affection for one another. Ray is a man who enjoys being the hero. His time away has affected him mentally and emotionally, and supplied the fuel to propel him into understanding that life is too short not to fight for what you want. Eric works hard to achieve his dreams, but his doubts about Ray stand in his way. There were points in the story where he should have thrown caution to the wind and trusted in his friendship to know that Ray wouldn’t play games with him. I understood he felt hurt, and decided that maybe it was a bit more deeply rooted than what I could imagine. I couldn’t chalk his stance up to “saving a friendship” because of the action that followed his decision. However, overall, Breaking Ground is a well-written story with believable characters and steamy erotic scenes. Those who enjoy the genre should pick up a copy.
