Laura and Aaron Palmer are on the road to divorce. They are only waiting for the adoption of their adorable daughter Amie to become final. Then Laura spots Amie’s photo in an ad for missing children. And someone slips the same information into Aaron’s briefcase. Each is terrified. They each slipped the adoption agency an extra $5,000 to speed the process. Will they be jailed? Aaron is afraid to confide in Laura. He’s ashamed of his own bad behavior and still loves her. Laura’s fears are similar. The child means everything to her and she still has feelings for her husband, despite his foolish and hurtful affair.
When they each discover the secrets, they consider hiding out in Canada. Friends and relatives become involved in the effort to reveal a sinister adoption ring. Amie’s other parents have political aspirations and the child’s welfare is a real concern. Laura and Aaron face physical dangers as Black Angel and his bosses try to keep them from revealing their lucrative actions.
This is a truly engrossing tale for anyone who has ever wondered about the stories behind those faces on the milk cartons. Author Karnopp does a great job revealing the stress of a couple unable to conceive. Her characters are all well developed and understandable, even the supporting cast. The story tugs at your heartstrings, without being saccharine or maudlin. I enjoyed it.
