Southern Utah is on fire and volunteer firefighter Aaron Meyers is working with hundreds of others, from all over the country, to save his hometown from destruction. It’s hot, sweaty work, and everyone is exhausted from the long hours spent fighting the flames and its continuing advancement into inhabited areas. Aaron needs to stay focused on the job, but he keeps getting distracted every time he sees or thinks about Xander Wescott, his teenage crush.
Xander Wescott left his hometown as soon as he graduated high school. Desperate to get away from the bigoted, narrow-minded people he grew up around, he found a new life, and love, in New York. He’s now a New York City firefighter, and while he never intended to return, that’s exactly what he does when he learns that flames are threatening his hometown and its residents. He remembers Aaron Meyers as the gangly kid brother of his best friend Eddie but what he finds is a gorgeous man that he’d like to know better.
Scorched is the August release in the ongoing Calendar Boys series by the amazing writing duo known as Jamie Craig. Nearly every summer flames engulf parts of the western United States, so it’s very realistic to have this month’s release revolve around the firefighters who risk life and limb keeping others safe. Ms. Craig does a wonderful job describing the conditions under which Aaron and Xander fall in love…danger, stifling heat, hot summer winds, and day after day without a drop of rain in sight. Between the fire plotline and the well-placed pieces of back-story, both Aaron and Xander come across as well-rounded, three-dimensional characters that you can’t help but like. That’s not the case with Aaron’s older brother Eddie. He comes across as a hateful, arrogant bigot who’d rather hurt the people he profess to care for, instead of accepting them for what they are. This guy was easy to dislike. If you’re looking for an enjoyable afternoon read filled with hot, sexy men, you should definitely give this scorcher a try.
