For his thirty-sixth birthday, Jimmy Trent gets two dozen roses, one dozen balloons and a night with a sexy young stripper, Adam Hyland. Adam is living in his car, stripping to survive, so when Jimmy invites him to stay for champagne, Adam dares to hope for more.

Phoenix Rising is an romantic struggle of two men attempting to overcome their fears and build a relationship. Younger than Jimmy, Adam is openly gay, independent and very aware of the hurt from social censure. Sensing that Jimmy can only see the good in people, Adam tries to protect him. Jimmy is a closet gay; he assumes that his family and friends know, yet he has never told them, and lives his life in a state of denial. Only the fear of losing Adam can force Jimmy out of his safety zone. While Adam and Jimmy do progress with their relationship, they have yet to reach the total commitment phase, settling with the happy-for-now stage instead. Kimberly Gardner has produced a story with all the elements of an emotional rollercoaster, the joy of being together and the heartache of separation. This is a most impressive tale that I enjoyed.
