Brian Storm, Detective III, worked hard and rose through the ranks, thanks to his ability to act quickly and efficiently. His last undercover assignment sends Brian to the hospital in need of emergency care after he is tortured. When Brian regains consciousness, he comes face to face with Stan Gordon, M.D., his attending physician.

Stan looks at the injured officer and knows he’s in serious trouble. The rules are simple, and designed to protect patients under doctor’s care, but something draws Stan to Brian. He recognizes his feelings aren’t those of a doctor for his patient, only sees someone in need of love, protection, and at the very least friendship.

Brian cannot discuss what happened to him, and Stan refuses to push him into exposing the truth. However, if their potential relationship is going to flourish, Brian will have to get over his trauma and move past his fears.

Carolina Valdez’s Forbidden Desire explores the relationship of Stan and Brian. Stan’s ethics push him to act in Brian’s best interest and provide friendship and support in the beginning. Regardless of his attraction, he didn’t want damage their possible relationship or the delicate connection that existed between them. Brian is a dynamic character, thanks to the events that lead to his injuries. His damaged self-confidence heals over time; with the help of Stan and others, he slowly works through these issues. Stan and Brian looked past their own needs and desires, to focus on building a strong foundation for their relationship. I believe I loved this most about the characters. While they physically desired the other, they didn’t let it overshadow their relationship and cause undue stress when it was possible.

Carolina Valdez brings a hard subject matter for most men to the forefront in Forbidden Desire. Society created a one-sided view on some of the traumas inflicted on men and women and Ms. Valdez has written about this misconception, allowing us to follow the progress of Brian as he comes to terms with the past. I found this smooth flowing story enlightening. Those who enjoy the genre will be at the very least impressed with plot, the characters and the message.
