Bestselling Mystery Writer Christopher Holmes’ editor is ready to give him the boot. His book sales have taken a nosedive and unless he can reinvent himself and create a new bestseller, his career will match the state of rigor mortis his series now exists within. His agent advises Christopher to attend a writer’s conference in Northern California as an attempt to gain time with his editor. If the weather is any indication to how the weekend will go, Christopher’s chances of this working are one hundred percent humidity with the possibility of hailstorms.
A nasty editor, a mouthy critic, and the man who makes Christopher warm just by looking at him are all present. Before it’s all over, he will help answer the question of who killed his editor.
Somebody Killed His Editor is the first book of Josh Lanyon’s Holmes & Moriarity series. Christopher is a forty-something writer who has become complacent with his career. The old adage “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” has not translated into his series continuing down a prosperous road. There were moments where I felt sorry for Christopher. He went into this change kicking and screaming, and I found myself laughing harder with each step. His satire definitely keeps the book interesting. Even during the most stressful of moments, I think that his wit was the difference between Christopher having a heart attack or being able to roll with the punches.
J.X. Moriarity is another author present during this weekend conference. He has a history with Christopher that brings passionate encounters and real tension into this story. Over the years, J.X. has taken on the career that Christopher once had, and I believe that was almost as sore a spot as Christopher’s post-weekend-affair reaction.
The secondary characters keep the book flowing with their humor, and bizarre actions, without taking the focus off the main characters. There were points I wished for more action between the characters and less access to Christopher’s thoughts. Then the secondary characters would charge in like the roaring twenties, and I had to hold on for the ride once more. Overall, I have to admit this was a fantastic beginning for this series. Somebody Killed His Editor has action, suspense and enough drama to give the soaps a run for their money, with strong well-developed characters, and a creative plot. The setting pulls everything together constructing a location that brings frights and romance to mind in healthy doses. These elements make this book is a winner. The story was a treat to read and I’m looking forward to the next installment of the series.
