When not teaching high school English, Kit Chao can usually be found in the family gym, training and helping pass down the traditions of his ancestry. His fighting days may be behind him but to Kit; Muay Thai fighting is so much more than just stepping into the ring. The martial art is a way of life and in Kit’s blood, giving him a sense of identity as nothing else can. If the gym is ever a fighter short or needs help, Kit is first in line.
Despite this feeling of belonging, there are parts of his life that Kit feels unable to share with the rest of the gym. He is worried his fellow fighters won’t understand or accept him if they knew he was gay. Kit’s more than happy to share that particular piece of information with Drew, though. A fellow teacher by trade, Kit and Drew hit it off straight away. As they get to know each other, Kit is eager to share his life as a Muay Thai fighter with his new man, but after witnessing a fight for himself, Drew isn’t sure he can accept it.
At the Sign of the Ancestors is a story of identity, discovery, honesty, sharing and acceptance. Kit’s ancestry has made him the man he is today and he wants Drew to understand that. Drew wants to accept Kit’s life and wishes Kit could be open about his sexuality but can’t comprehend the rich history and traditions behind Kit’s fighting. The characters are warm and likable, dialog flowing easy, but the plot seems laden down with the different themes being explored. The traditions of Muay Thai fighting seem well researched and beautifully described, but after such a good introduction to Kit, his family and ancestry, Drew seems to appear out of nowhere. Perhaps given more time to build up the relationship, reveal how they met and allow their feelings to deepen, the struggle Drew has with trying to accept Kit’s life would have had more impact. As it was, Drew’s change of heart wasn’t really explained in any depth. Despite this though, the style of writing was humorous and enjoyable to read.
