The demon counsel asks for Cody’s aid with the zombie problem. Cody views this as a chance to extract his revenge on his former demon lover Li and to destroy Li’s brother, Vaul. Li never admitted to Cody that he was a demon, but Cody knew and stayed because he loved Li until Vaul attacked Cody and he had to spend time locked in a medallion to regenerate his body. Cody is consumed by rage; his brainpower is the only part of him able to function, so he absorbs the magical secrets and becomes more powerful than the demons. Cody’s goal to belittle Li in the demon society is accomplished, but Cody discovers that revenge is not so sweet, leaving them both empty and broken.
Shattered Dreams is an excellent example of how misunderstandings can lead to the wrong conclusion. Cody had revealed some of his secrets to Li and thought Li had betrayed him to his brother because Cody was barely able to defend himself when he was attacked. Fear of rejection from Cody kept Li’s truth unspoken, which resulted in Cody leaving and Li bewildered by Cody’s departure. The amazing Mychael Black and Shayne Carmichael deliver the message that silence can be deadly to a relationship and it’s a thin line between love and hate. Shattered Dreams is an impressive and enjoyable story.
