This anthology contains three very different tales about risk-taking. They are unconnected by genre and style. One tale rests on political corruption, another is a ghost legend, and the third features a psychic mad scientist.
A Dangerous Exchange by Jennifer McKenzie (2 Nymphs) has Marnie Coleman searching for evidence to find the person who murdered her parents. She’s employed as a courier and may be transporting blood diamonds. African espionage Todd Atchison, watchdog for the UN, is trying to keep her out of trouble.
Lies, secrets abound, murder, and corruption come to the surface. It’s an interesting adventure, but I felt little connection between the characters. I also had some difficulty following the plot.
Dawn Montgomery’s Burn Out (2.5 Nymphs) is a spooky tale of the undead. Zoe Taylor is a photographer on her first trip to Alaska. The Bristo sheriff, Noah Reynolds, enlists her aid photographing a gruesome body. The body disappears and a deputy is attacked. An escaped and rotting convict, Samuel Pickins, is involved and it’s all connected to a 100-year-old curse. Noah, along with 13 others, was troubled by reoccurring dreams.
The others are all dead, and Zoe wants to hang on to her newfound mountain man. There’s a good ghost story here in the Land of the Midnight Sun, but the nature of the curse – and the time sequence – never made sense to me. The story had great atmosphere, but little logic.
The Artistry of Auras by Lainey Bancroft (3 Nymphs) is the most interesting of the lot. New detective Petra Canon is assigned to work with The Psychic Task Force. Her father has little use for this nonsense and has always derided Petra’s crime solving abilities.
Task Force Leader Mike Angelo has major aura reading powers. He’s arrogant and sexy, and Petra can’t resist him. Four women are missing -- all resembling Petra. She assumes they are dead, while Mike believes they are alive. The genetics of aura reading powers form the basis for the crimes. This unusual tale has lots of action and a mad scientist feel and a heroine coming to terms with herself. It kept my interest from beginning to end.
