Daniel hates his life and after his father kicks him out of the house for being gay, he hates it even more. Without a home, he’s forced to crash on a worthless friend’s couch for weeks while he tries to figure out what he wants to do, now that he’s on his own. Depressed and unhappy, his life spirals out of control with drugs and alcohol. He’s not even certain about being gay until he meets Roderick, who teaches him that there are lots of bump-in-the-night things in the world that are far stranger than men loving men. Roderick has designs on Daniel, and as much as he wants the young mortal with him, he never takes the final step so they can be together.
DeVante is Roderick’s Sire and when he discovers the unhealthy condition Roderick has left Daniel in, he’s furious. Daniel’s scared, lonely, can’t sleep and is losing weight all because he’s living in a precarious limbo world caught between mortal and Vampire. His only hope is Roderick’s sire, who agrees to take him under his powerful tutorage, teaching him what he needs to know in order to survive in the cruel and savage world of Vampires.
DeVante’s Children is a dark and broody paranormal tale. In this new and intriguing story, the Vampires are few in number and always kill their victims when they feed. Unlike most Vampire tales currently on the market, there is little to like about SM Johnson’s deadly, self-centered and arrogant creatures, which I found surprising. Then there are those occasions when Roderick or DeVante would do something tender and caring, and I’d change my attitude toward them, at least for a while. Katarina, DeVante’s creator, is a dangerous and violent killer and frankly I would have loved to see her staked. I don’t know whether of not there is another release to follow but I, for one, would love to see what happens after Daniel makes his move from the world of mortal to Vampire.
